Navy gifts have been a part of the Ithaca community for over 150 years. The city’s maritime history is rooted in its relationship with the United States Navy. In 1855, the United States Congress passed a resolutioncalling for the construction of a navy in Ithaca. On October 15, 1857, Commodore John A. Macomb, Commander in Chief of the American Fleet stationed at New York City signed an order awarding $5,000 to be used towards this purpose. This was followed by donations from businesses and individuals in Ithaca until 1861 when Commodore David Farragut took command of American Naval forces on Long Island and instructed his sailors to stop giving away naval supplies. In 1862, Commodore Farragut ordered that all naval stores be destroyed as it was believed they could be used by our enemies to build warships. This event is documented through memoirs by both Commodore James Waring and Commodore Robert Fulton who were on board the USS Constitution during this time period. The destruction of these supplies effectively ended America’s role as a military power in the Mediterranean Sea while also causing great harm to British naval vessels which had been using these facilities to build their own warships. The first gift given by Ithaca residents was a plaque commemorating Commodore Farragut’s visit to town on December 2nd, 1862. This plaque read: “This Site Symbolizes Noblest Love That Fired Our War For Independence And Made America Great Again!” It was donated by MrsRansom & Sons Hardware Store located on Main Street between State and Elm Streets during 1916-17 (See photo). Over time there has been an increase in gifts from outside of the city due to its proximity to New York City and its status as an important port for exports from New England states such as Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Ithaca Naval Yard was founded in 1814 as the merchant navy of New York City. It became an active naval facility with the construction of a squadron of ships, including USS Constitution (1797), USS America (1812), and USS Delaware (1816). Theyard also erected batteries at Sandy Hook Point and Fishkill Landing to protect against French attacks on Manhattan. In 1821, the yard was renamed the United States Naval Academy after American Commodore James K. Polk. In 1861, during the American Civil War, the ship CSS Virginia was sunk in Ithaca Harbor by Confederate forces under Rear Admiral Farragut. A plaque commemorates this event at Battery Park South near Ithaca's downtown core. During World War II, Ithaca was home to two U-boats: "U-811" and "U-929". "U-811" attacked shipping off Long Island Sound on December 7, 1941; "U-929" sank a tanker off Governors Island six days later. both boats were destroyed by Navy gunfire before they could be located or stopped.

The Town of Ithaca was founded in 1785 by Loyalist settlers on land that had been confiscated from the Iroquois Confederacy. The first courthouse was built in 1805. In 1828, the town became an incorporated village under the name of Rochester. The town reached its peak as an agricultural center during World War II with production of apples and other crops totaling over 1 million pounds (500,000 kg). After the war, however, economic decline led to loss of jobs and falling population levels until recent decades when growth has resumed and new housing developments have replaced former agriculture land. Ithaca's rich cultural history includes examples of early 20th century feminist writer Fannie Farmer; nineteenth century artist Edward Hopper; twentieth century composer John Cage; and current painters David Stone Martin and Jay Lynch.
