The name "Ithaca" is an anglicized form of the Erie Canal's original name, Canandaigua Creek. Ithaca was founded by colonists from England in 1785 and incorporated as a village on April 1, 1794. In 1814, it became the capital of New York State following its creation from part of Albany County.
