The Ithaca Air Force Base gift history goes back to World War II. During that time, the base was home to the 307th Bomb Squadron. The squadron operated from Ithaca Municipal Airport. In 1957, the 307th moved to Elmira Municipal Airport and continued its operation until 1969. From 1969-1973, the 307th flew F-4 Phantoms at Lackland AFB in San Antonio TX. From 1973-1978, the squadron flew F-102 Delta stealthfighters at Offutt AFB in Omaha NE. In 1978, the 307th turned over its assets to the New YorkAir National Guard and converted into an E-3 Sentry Surveillance Aircraft Wing with eighteen E-3s. Since then, three of these aircraft have been lost in accidents: one due to a lightning strike while on static display at Joint Base Elmira/New London (NE); one during a flypast of Memorial Day weekend; and another due to engine failure while taking off for an exercise near Albany NY on Jun 30 2009. The Ithaca Air National Guard was founded on December 12, 1947 by the New York State Legislature as a result of an act signed by Governor Dewey F. Malone. The unit was activated on April 15, 1948 and its first mission was to provide personnel for the newly created Joint Air Defense Force in the Finger Lakes region. In 1951, A-4EMD Thunderchiefs were converted into aerial refueling tanker aircraft and flew missions over Europe providing airlift support to Operating Command commitments. In 1957, ANG A-6D Intruder trainers were received from United States Military Aircraft Corporation at Lackland AFB TX and became operational with theANG at Ithaca. In 1961, ANG A-7 Corsair II's replaced Thunderchiefs as aerial refueling tankers in New York airspace and during this time also served as air defense elements for all of New York state. Another significant event occurred when ANG KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft were acquired from United Airlines Corp at Elmira AFB NY in 1966 and became operative with theANG primarily equipped with ECM pods which enabled interceptions of enemy missiles or targets near Manhattan while en route to or from their launching sites. The deployment of these airborne interception assets played a significant role in averting major conflict in Vietnam during that period On July 1, 1978,the last Douglas DC-9 operated by the ANG was retired at Elmira AFB after more than 20 years operations flying passenger service between Buffalo Niagara Falls area and Syracuse/Ithaca/Utica airports Angulargtn disbanded effective October 1st 1980 when all combat aviation units were combined under one command - USAF

Ithaca, New York is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 24,745 at the 2010 census. Ithaca is the county seat of Cayuga County and the largest city in Upstate New York. It lies on the south shore of Lake Ithaca and about 20 miles north-northwest of Albany. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ithaca were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and his crew of three vessels sailing along the eastern coast of North America. Dutch traders also visited Ithaca in 1614 when they sailed downriver from Pemaquid Lakes to trade with Indians on the east side of Lake Ontario. In 1635, Governor William Bradford visited Ithaca while surveying the area for a new English colony and noted that "the land hereabouts is fertile enough for any purpose." In 1764, during the French Revolutionary Wars, General James Wolfe besieged Fort Niagara at Saratoga National Park before crossing over into Canada to relieve Quebec City under British General John Burgoyne. Afterward, most people withdrew from what became known as "New England". A small group including some Loyalists stayed until 1784 when they were removed by order of George Washington as part of his Indian Removal Act. In 1815–1816 American troops fought an abortive battle against Tecumseh's forces near present day Uniontown; this was followed by a series of skirmishes throughout upstate New York culminating with Battle Creek on October 15–17 1813 which led to Tecumseh's defeat at Hennepin Creek after retreating across Kankakee River into Illinois Territory

Ithaca's rich agricultural history begins with its first crop of corn in 1785. In 1814, Ithaca became the capital of New York State after Albany was destroyed by a fire. Over the next several decades, Ithaca experienced rapid growth and development, becoming an important center for education and industry. By 1920, it had become an officially recognized city by state law. In 1938, Ithaca joined the United States during World War II as a strategic bombing target due to its large population centers and military installations. After the war, Ithaca underwent significant modernization including the construction of highways and bridges. By 2000, it had regained much of its former glory as an academic center and cultural destination.
