Hempstead is a small town in Dutchess County, New York, USA. The population was 2,820 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is part of the Greater East Harlem area. The first settlers in Hempstead were Dutch and English farmers who arrived in 1624 and 1625. The name "Hempstead" was derived from two possible localities: Hempstedt (a village near Poughkeepsie) or Hemsedde (the older name for what is now Hempstead). In 1764, John Montresor bought 640 acres of land on the south side of present-day Hempstead Lake from Nicholas Voorhees. In 1768, he founded Montresor's Mills and soon became one of the leading industrialists in northeastern New York. In 1827, Nicholas Sloat donated 1 million dollars to found Sloat Memorial Colored High School; it remains one of the largest philanthropic donations ever made to an educational institution in America. In 1872, James Buchanan organized a group of businessmen known asOperation Open Hand to promote railroad construction through rural areas throughout America. This effort led to increased trade between the United States and Europe and created many new jobs for American workers. During World War II, Hempstead served as a major airbase for Allied forces during Operation Overlord; it also played a significant role in supply convoys transporting supplies into Nazi-occupied Europe.

Hempstead is a small town in Kings County, New York, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the border of Queens and Nassau County. The first settlers in Hempstead were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. The town was named after Anthony Hempstead, an early settler and captain of a whaling vessel that sailed to North America from Holland in 1665. In 1785, work started on the Erie Canal and Hempstead became one of its original townships. In 1814, the First Regiment of Militia (now troop number 9) was mustered into service at Hempstead by Governor John Thurlow De Witt as part of the American War of Independence. The regiment served until it disbanded in 1815; however, due to its history and connection to the town it remains locally known as "The Fifth Regiment". Hempstead has numerous landmarks including: The Anthony Cotton Mill (built 1854), Stonington Park (1896), Weedle's General Store (1886), both local high schools (Hempsted High School and Central High School), which are now both college-level institutions, and several churches including Our Lady of Lourdes Church which serves as the community center for Hempstead. During World War II hemp production played a significant role in providing munitions for Allied forces; many mills closed during this time but some continue to produce goods such as jeans despite being banned by the government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program known as "stapler diplomacy". After much debate within Congress over whether or not to legalize industrial hemp farming following passage of Federal Farm Bill No. 735 in 1937, all US states had legal permission to grow industrial hemp starting with California beginning with Trinity crops grown there pursuant to State Planning Directive Number 5-A dated October 15th 1935 issued by then Agricultural Director Claude Risner at Chatsworth Farms near San Jose Mercury News Decatur Daily Democrat November 3rd 1935 paged 8 pages 9 lines deep headlined "State Plan Allows Industrial hemp growth" The first strains developed for use in cigarettes were Colombian—a type strain used for English cigarettes—and Egyptian—a type strain used for Italian cigarettes; however these two types of plants were targeted towards different markets so they no longer produce pure cannabinoids today. However CBD oils derived from industrial hemp have been shown effective against various medical conditions such as chronic pain and multiple sclerosis since 2007 according to research published in Cannabis & cannabinoids magazine Volume 10 Issue 2
Hempstead is located in the town of Hempstead on Long Island. The first European to sight the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sailed up the New York River in 1524 and named it after his hometown of Venice. The Dutchman Hendrik de Vries saw Hempstead from a distance in 1614 and called it "Verrazano's Haven". English explorer John Smith also passed through the area in 1711 while exploring what is now Vermont. The first permanent settler in Hempstead was Nicholas Astor, who arrived in 1764. He built a woolen mill on the east side of Long Island Sound. After Astor's death, his son Nathaniel bought the mill and continued to operate it until 1835. In that year, Nathaniel sold it to Joshua Hempstead, Sr., who moved it to its present location on Starbuck Road near Interstate 95. Joshua Hempstead Jr., who became head of the family business, died in 1881; his son Joshua Henshaw took over running the mill until 1949. After World War II, hemp production increased as a result of new technology developed for denim production from marijuana plants grown for other purposes such as building paper or plastics. In 1954, New York State legalized cannabis use for medical purposes; however, hemp cultivation remained illegal until 2009 when Section 7-455 of New York State law was repealed effective February 1st that year by Governor David Paterson with Executive Order 12372/2009 setting forth guidelines for industrial hemp farming operations within New York State .
