Hempstead is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 23,752 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Hempstead were the Mohawks and Oneida Indians who built their villages on high ground near present-day Uniondale. In 1664, William Penn founded what is now Delaware County, New York as an Anglican parish in response to religious persecution by the Dutch at home. The English colonists soon began expanding westward and when they reached the border of what is now Orange County in 1688, they named it after Sir George Herbert (the Earl of Pembroke) because he had been one of their most generous donors during their early days as settlers in this area. In 1759, Nicholas Griggs erected a mill on the north side ofpresent-day Main Street to process hempseed which he had brought over from Pennsylvania. At that time Hempstead was part of Albany but due to its location between two major rivers it became an important seaport for goods moving up and down the Hudson River. By 1800 there were 10 mills processing hempseed with a total output of $2 million annually from export sales alone! During World War II many farmers within Hempstead turned to hemp production for paper products such as airplaneRex cardboard and other war materials; however much later when plastics became more popular many farmers switched back to traditional agriculture methods including growing corn, soybeans and wheat etc., until weaning off our dependence on fossil fuels caused us to go completely GMO free!
