Hempstead is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is part of the Oneonta–Elmira–Lathrop, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the Mohawk– Susquehanna Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Hempstead was Nicholas de Montfort who arrived in 1623 and petitioned for land from Governor William Cosby. In 1635, Nathan Myrick founded a sawmill on the river near present-day Main Street and Green Avenue. In 1786, John Latham erected a grist mill on what is now Court Street. In 1814, Thomas Edison built his home at 213 Elmira Place while working as an apprentice to his father’s business partner Joseph Swan (1784-1847). In 1845, he moved to 179 Elmira Place and started his own electrical company with two friends named Amos Northrop and Edward Condon (1802-1872). Hempstead voted in favor of secession from New York state in 1861 during the American Civil War; however, it reabsorbed into New York State within three years after its vote. The First World War interrupted this process and led to many out-of-town residents moving into Hempstead during that time period including Averell Harriman (1901-1983), Prescott Bush (1945-) and James Buchanan (1993-) all of whom became prominent Americans during their times there
