Hempstead, New York is home to the United States Army's Arnold Division. The division was originally founded in 1812 and served as a militia unit before becoming an active army unit in 1903. The Arnold Division was first stationed in Hempstead until 1957 when it moved to Fort Drum. In 1963, the Arnold Division was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Division and then the 3rd Infantry Division. The division has fought in many wars including World War II, Vietnam, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 1st Infantry Division also received a Presidential Unit Citation for their roles in that conflict. Currently, the 1st Infantry Division is headquartered at Fort Polk in Louisiana.
