The National Guard of Haverstraw, New York was first organized on April 20, 1827. The unit was named the 1st Regiment of State Militia, New York. It was then renamed the 2nd Regiment of State Militia on November 15, 1828. On September 9, 1830, it was redesignated as the 3rd Regiment of State Militia and again on February 14, 1835 as the 4th Regiment of State Militia. It was disbanded on October 1, 1840. On December 13, 1860, the National Guard re-formed in Haverstraw and was given its current name: the Haverstraw National Guard Corps. It remained an active force until January 17th 1969 when it amalgamated with other state militias to form the New York Army National Guard.

Haverstraw is a small town located in upstate New York, on the banks of the Haverstraw River. The population was 2,034 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneida County, New York, Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Haverstraw" originated from an early settler named John Haverston who settled there in 1710. The first structure built in Haverstraw was a log cabin known as White's Cabin. Over time, other buildings were erected and many people lived and worked here until the late 1800s when many farmers moved to other parts of Upstate New York due to advancing technology and agriculture changes. In 1811, three men by the name of Ford developed a system for irrigation with water they dug from a stream near their farmstead. This system became known as Ford's Ditch or Ford Canal which later became part of NY 26 and still used today for irrigation purposes. In 1834-35 James Wigglesworth built what is now called Wigglesworth House on land that he purchased from Nicholas Easton for $2 per acre (the then high price for this type of land). Mr. Wigglesworth was one of the early settlers in Haverstraw and his home remains one of its most prominent features today. In 1851-1852 George Rome founded Rome Machine Works located on what is now North Main Street which manufactured tools including mills and sawmills used throughout Upstate New York; these operations ceased production in 1957 but remain significant historical landmarks in Haverstraw today! After years during which few people resided here except transient visitors – mainly via boat downriver – growth began to occur around 1930 when Harry Bemis formed Bemis Elevator Company Inc., predecessor to current Empire Elevators Incorporated; this company built several elevators within walking distance of town center starting with Bobby’s Hill Tower (now civic center) followed by others such as Town Hall (1939), First Presbyterian Church (1940), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1941), Masonic Lodge No 2 & 3 combined into one building (1946), Averill Harriman Library Building (1950), Gifford Motor Company Factory Store(1954) – all within easy reach by foot or bike! Today, many residents live close together through various forms of transportation including biking, carspooling/sharing rideshare services or Driving Alone days each month where residents come out en masse to walk/run along scenic routes near their homes instead of using public transportation! Many businesses also reside near-by inside dense apartment complexes so it really has become “ lifestyles vs.(locations) - get out there” !! !

George Washington requested a regiment of soldiers to be raised in the colonies, but was refused because he lacked military experience. He commissioned Major John Adams to create a unit, andAdams recruited several thousand men from Massachusetts and New York. The Continental Army was born on July 4, 1775. The first National Guard unit was organized on October 25, 1776 in Philadelphia by General Anthony Wayne as part of the Continental Army under George Washington. It consisted of 15 company-sized units and numbered 107 officers and men. On December 14, 1776, General James Kieft ordered all state militias in New York to provide one hundred men for service with the Continental Army at White Plains. This led to the formation of 2nd Regiment (Westchester County) New York Infantry on February 20th, 1777 at Kingston upon Hudson by Colonel Nicholas Schenectady commanding 1st Battalion (Madison County). In response to America's first act of war against Great Britain – the Ticonderoga campaign – Congress created an additional regiment on May 10th, 1777 called 2nd Regiment (New York State) Light Infantry which served throughout the Revolutionary War alongside 3rd Regiment (Dutchess County), 5th Regiment (Kingston upon Hudson), 6th Regiment (Sullivan County), 7th Regiment (Lackawanna County), 8th Regiment (Hamilton County) and 9th Regiment Loyalists Militia under command of Captains James Clinton Thomson and Alexander Henderson Glasgow into existence at Saratoga Springs on October 26TH1777 while still quartered at Schuylkill Hall under Majors Archibald Forbes & Benjamin Franklin [1]. Haverstraw is a village in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–New York Metropolitan Area. The area now called Haverstraw started as a small cluster of houses on the banks of the Mohawk River in 1776 by farmers who had left British America to escape taxation. They named their new settlement after Haverstock Heath near Bath, England. In 1802, Haverstraw became an incorporated town and continued to be governed by a board of selectmen until 1865 when it became borough status. The Borough was renamed Haverstraw Village in 1929 and again in 1951. In 1827-28 two men from Canada named John Lyon and James Sweeny built a log cabin on what is now Main Street at the mouth of Little Falls Creek, just south of present-day Haverstraw village limits (now within Rochester). They called their settlement "Haverstock." A post office was established at "Haverstock" in 1830, but only served residents of the adjacent town of Auburn until 1840 when it was moved to Haverstraw proper. In 1851-52 three brothers—Edmond Le Moyne (1811-1881), George Le Moyne (1815-1880), and Peter Cushing (1795-1875)—founded what would become known as The Home Insurance Company which manufactured insurance policies for settlers west of Buffalo Niagara Harbor including those in present day upstate New York and Ontario Canada. In 1872 Lyman Potter organized his family into four farming families that began operation of Potter's Mills; this operated until 1915 when it closed due to World War I shortages in materials and labor needed to operate large mills during wartime production cyclesLlyon Potter reopened Potter's Mills as another grocery store/cafeteria complex with additional retail space later becoming known as The Pavilion precursor to today's Macy's Center located on Main Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North
Haverstraw was first settled in 1785 by Nicholas Haverstock. The town became a village in 1825. In 1898, it was renamed after Major General George Washington Haverstraw.
