Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York, located about 25 miles east of Albany. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Niagara County and includes the villages of Haverstraw, North Haverston, East Haverston, and Sweden Hill. The first Europeans to visit what is now Haverstraw were Dutch settlers in 1614. The name "Haverstraw" means "hadow on the stream." In 1786, General John Sullivan's army destroyed a Mohawk village here while besieging Fort George on tip of Lake Ontario. In 1812, under General Anthony Wayne's command during the War of 1812 against Great Britain, Haverstraw was burned by British forces after they took possession of Canada West from the Canadian government. The Town of Haverstraw was established in 1786 as part of Clinton Township when it was divided between Albany and Niagara Counties. It became an incorporated town in 1824. On November 3rd, 2006 President Bush announced that he would be traveling to New York for his inauguration that day; this event would mark only his third trip to New York since taking office as President (the others being visits to Washington D.C., Chicago and Atlantic City). He had previously made two trips to New York City – one in 1993 and one in 2001 – both with limited events due to weather concerns (New Yorkers are notoriously accommodating). On election night2006 NY state senator Daniel Squadron had been elected Mayor pro tempore with almost 50% of the vote- just over 5 years since he first ran for office against incumbent Republican Tom Foley who polled over 60%. Squadron later served four terms as Mayor before retiring effective June 30th 2020 having accomplished some very important community goals such as creating new parks including our popular Riverside Park which has become a popular spot for sports & open fires etc.–something many other towns could learn from!
