The Coast Guard was founded in 1792 in response to the request for help from citizens who were being terrorized by pirates. The first coast guard station was located in Haverstraw, New York. Haverstraw, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes of New York State. The population was 7,798 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Servicetown Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Haverstraw, a small village in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The first settler in Haverstraw was James Haverstraw, who arrived in 1772 and claimed land on which his family later built a sawmill and gristmill. In 1801 John McDonald settled in what became Haverstraw and soon began to grow crops and build mills around the now defunct village center or "village green." In 1810 Englishman William Fenton bought some of Fenton's holdings on east side of Town line Road (now Route 9) from Dutchman Cornelius Harmans for $100 per acre. This settlement came to be known as "Fentonville." In 1820 when George Stephenson developed the Erie Canal through this area he chose to place his mill on riverbank just west of present day downtown Haverstrath about one-half mile from where his canal boats would dock for loading/unloading their cargoes of salt water fish that he was exporting downriver. It took only a few years for Fentonville to become an important commercial center with stores, taverns and houses lining Main Street between First Avenue south and Third Avenue north. By 1830 there were also three churches - Reformed Dutch Church (founded 1797), Baptist church (1802), and Methodist Episcopal church (1831). A post office was established at Fentonville in 1832; it remained open until 1865 when it moved to nearby Poultney Junction. Hazelton’s store opened next door on West Fourth Street in 1830 by Elijah Hazelton Jr., son of Elijah Hazelton Sr., who had come over from America with his father two years earlier aboard Captain David Levy’s ship “Leviathan” bound for Canada via Kingston Harbour. From 1830 until its closing in 1840 Hazelton operated what are now considered as two main businesses: an innkeeper/motel keeper called “The House” on North Second Street near Main Street; and a gristmillinery business started by Revivals Minister Samuel Morse called “Morse Mill” on East Third Street opposite First Avenue which still stands today converted into apartments above ground level facing Thompson Square Park across from Central Library which has been home to many local businesses including several restaurants since 2006 including Paula Deen's bakery . . . In 1840 Reverend Morse opened another millinery business called Mills & Mills at Seventh Place east of Main near Union Depot among others doing business as Davenport & Sons blacksmith shop until 1860 when it closed because too much competition from larger operations led by John Cappadocia with location off Whitehall Pike adjacent to Seneca Lake just outside modern day Schenectady
