Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Town of Haverstraw and the North Hudson Valley School District. The town was founded by George Haverstraw in 1797 and named for him. Haverstraw built a log cabin on the edge of his property and started to trade with other local towns. He also became involved in religious activities, founding a Methodist church in 1824. In 1848, George Haverstraw's son-in-law, James Wenzell, donated land to the town for development purposes. This area became known as "Wenzell Park." In 1865, Wenzell died and bequeathed another piece of land to the town - this time for an arterial road connecting it with nearby Auburn (now Utica). In 1896, Wm. Jennings bought 8 acres from George Haverstraw for $1,000. Jennings began developing what would become Jennings Addition - now home to many businesses including a A&P supermarket and several restaurants - into one of America's earliest suburban neighborhoods. Jennings Addition continued to develop until World War II when most of it were destroyed by bombing raids during the warring nations' wars in Europe. Only a few homes remain today; they are mostly occupied by military veterans or their families who have taken advantage of the availability of affordable housing near I-87 and SR 919 .

Haverstraw is a small town in New York County, New York, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Haverstraw was John Arrowsmith who arrived in 1792. He founded a small farm on what is now Main Street. Arrowsmith's grandson, Amos Haverstraw, also settled in Haverstraw and operated a gristmill from 1801 to 1809. In 1837, Joseph Haskell bought the mill and it continued operation until 1938. In 1898, the town was renamed after General James Averill Haverhill (1775–1845), an American general during the War of Independence who served as brigadier general and major general in the Union army. In 1925, local Consolidated Telephone Company built its headquarters on Main Street and began using land east of present-day Park Avenue for its own purposes (renaming that area Park Square). During World War II, many military units were stationed here including: 10th Mountain Division; 9th Armored Cavalry Regiment; 1st Squadron PIR (Regiment); 331 Infantry Battalion; 383rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team; 307th Tactical Missile Wing
