When he became President of the United States on January 3rd, 1800, he chose to be known as George Washington rather than Sir John Marshall which would have given him an honorary title if he had lived long enough to receive one. The town grew rapidly after independence was granted to the United States on November 14th, 1776 and soon there were stores, churches and homes built around what is now Main Street. By 1800 there were also three schools and a post office within the limits of present day Harrison When white settlers began moving into this area during the mid-19th century they encountered Native American Reservation land which included much of what is now Harrison In 1851 when New York State acquired all of Niagara County from Canada it included most of what is now Erie County including parts of what are now Buffalo and Niagara Falls As white settlement increased along this new border Indian Territory continued to shrink until by 1870 only about 10% remained within present day Harrison . This includes much of what is today Highland Park In 1870 Indian Territory consisted mostly of low lying swampy areas between Ontario Provincial Highway 9 northward (now Interstate 84) and Canadian National Railway tracks eastward (now US Route 614) . In 1881 local farmers decided to install a water wheel based on an idea suggested by a German immigrant that engines could pull wagons filled with coal through a large hole in the center of their farmsteads . This early waterwheel system provided power for mills until 1906 when electric systems arrived By 1880 nearly all manufacturing had shifted away from agriculture into services such as transportation , home building , food processing and lumber production so that many small businesses closed down during this period especially those related to farming activities One example was Henschel & Co which operated out of Main Street between 1850-1900 Another company notable for its products during this time was Waddell & Nichols which manufactured saddles from horsehair
