The first permanent settler in Gloversville was James Glover who arrived in 1786. The town was named for John Glover (1749-1819), an early settler and proprietor of land on the north side of the Hudson River in what is now Orangeburg County. The first post office at Gloversville was established on October 12, 1814 by George Aitken and Issachar Brooks. The name may derive from "Glovers" or "Goode". Aitken and Brooks were both natives of Ulster Province in Ireland. In 1827, David Wertz bought 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of Gloversville from James Clements for $5 per acre ($/km²). Wertz built a log cabin here which served as his seat until his death in 1852. His son Amos Wertz continued to operate this cabin until it burned down in 1918. In 1862, Jethro Mott built one of the earliest sawmills known to have been located within present day Gloversville limits; it became known as Mott's Sawmill because its founder donated equipment to that mill during its initial construction there – also later renamed the William Halsey Sawmill after Jethro Mott's son-in-law who operated it for many years beginning with its maiden production in 1898 Mott also founded what is now called First National Bank building on Main Street west of present day Post Road middle school nears where he had earlier erected a sawmill damselflowering pond behind which he stored his lumber while awaiting shipment across the river by boatload during winter months before selling off all but about 10% interest each year subsequent to 1850 During Anthony Bourdain’s staycation at Goshen Falls Resort over Memorial Day weekend 2017 some artifacts associated with local fishing history were exhibited inside Old Mattress Factory restaurant & gift shop located adjacent to Nanticoke State Park next door including historic fishing net weights dating back to 1860s
