The Gloversville Military Deployed Gift History Museum is a museum that tells the story of military deployments in and around Gloversville, New York. The museum was founded in 1998 by retired Army Captain John Prentice and his wife Barbara. From 1998 to 2006, the couple donated all of their belongings from their home in Gloversville to the museum. Since then, donations have come from local businesses, individuals, and organizations. The museum has displays on military history from World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom. There are also exhibits on artifacts associated with the United States military deployment in Afghanistan during the 1990s and 2000s. Gloversville, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of what is now Gloversville were French colonists who arrived in 1624. The original name of the town was "Gloversfield". In 1814, it was renamed to "Utica" after General James K. Polk's visit to Utica and its vicinity on his way to take part in the War of 1812. In 1828, Gloversville became a town charter and post office under the name "Utica". On July 1, 1830, it incorporated as a village with a population of 316 residents; this merger followed an act by the New York State Legislature which granted Village status to villages that had adopted resolutions setting forth their purpose and boundaries. On October 15, 1865, Gloversville became an incorporated city under the laws of New York state with a population exceeding 7500 citizens when it annexed from Utica two Sabbathsundred fifty acres (2 km²) east of Main Street. This annexation brought Gloversville within walking distance of most sections of downtown Utica but did not include all residential areas located east and south of Main Street; these areas were annexed by Utica during subsequent years until they constituted only about one third (about 20%)of total Gloversville's area today. The early days for Gloversville were difficult times as no industries could be established due to lack of available land or water resources – until white men came into contact with Native Americans hereabouts through fur trading operations begun by Dutch traders in 1624 and continued by Englishmen throughout much of North America thereafter. In 1909, the Gloversville Bridge was built over the Rondout Creek to connect Gloversville with Westbury Township. The bridge is still used today and is one of the oldest surviving bridges in upstate New York. The Glover’s Ferry Dam which served as a water supply for Gloversville and surrounding villages until 1954 also remains a popular tourist destination today. In 1947, the United States Postal Service introduced ZIP Code 10586 which covers all of Adams County including Gloversville. It has been unchanged since then and continues to be used today to this day!
In the early 1800s, Gloversville was a small community in upstate New York. It was named after Major General John Glover, who fought in the American Revolution. The community developed around a mill and sawmill located on the west side of town. By 1820, Gloversville had a population of about 175 people. The mill continued to be operated until it was destroyed by fire in 1892. In that year, the town officially incorporated and began to grow as a result of its new status as a municipality.
