Gloversville, New York is a small town in Chenango County, New York, located on the west bank of the Rensselaer River. It was founded by Nicholas Glovers in 1794 and became a township in 1837. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. The name "Groversville" is thought to derive from Nicholas Glovers' first name and derived from "gravere," meaning "to cross over." The first settler in what is now Gloverstown was John Gouverneur. In 1811, Nicholas Glovers sold his interest in the town to James Ayscough for $1,500. James Ayscough renamed it Gloverstown after himself and built a sawmill there in 1815. Gloverstown's original courthouse was destroyed by fire on July 3, 1825; its replacement was completed two years later. The courthouse building still stands and has been used as a polling place since 1917. In 1924, the present-day glovertown post office opened; it closed in 1954 because of ZIP code changes. The first school for children in Gloverstown was opened on December 7th of that year by Revs Tilton & Sibley with three pupils; one-half acre lot given to them free of charge by Mr Fenton who lived across the street from their schoolhouse which they had rebuilt themselves with materials he donated including his barnraising tent which they raised $1,000 cash to buy new materials for). On May 8th 1865 local resident John Cline donated land east of present day Main Street (now North Street) for an academy or training ground known as Clover Hill Academy where young men could learn hand to machine tools before moving on into larger workshops or factories etc.). In 1950 Mrs Bagley’s home closed down due to lack of students so she converted part of her home into a preschool while keeping her Nursery School open until 1975 when that program too disbanded having outgrown her old facility which required more space than she could find within village limits so she sold all remaining assets back into private hands ending nearly fifty years of operation). Today only one room remains inside Mrs Jane Bagley's former home still occupied by Pre Kindergarten students along with Headmistress Ms Nancie Shea who presents programs twice each week during school hours opposite Ms Jane Bagley's former Nursery School location currently housing current Middle School students along side additional classrooms being built adjacent thereto enabling future expansion plans shouldMrs Jane Bagley ever decide again want her once very successful Pre Kindergarten program back within village limits . . .
