It lies on the north bank of the Hudson River and is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gloversville has been inhabited by Native Americans since 1614 when it was known as "Haŋhonkonkon". In 1819 Gloversville became part of what was then Albany County. In 1827 it became part of Saratoga County. In 1832 Gloversville became a part of Orange County. The first known settler in Gloversville was Nicholas de Witt who arrived in 1614 as one of three colonists under the command of Hendrick Van Rensselaer from Holland. De Witt built a small log cabin on current day Main Street and named it Fort Nassau after his father's ship, Nassau which had left Amsterdam for New Netherland that year with fifteen other settlers. The first post office opened in 1792 but no mention is made of Gloversville until 1800 when John Glover located and purchased land near present day Canal Street between Locust and Cypress Streets to build a mill he called "Nassau". In 1821 Nicholas de Witt sold his interest in Fort Nassau to Lewis Cass who renamed it "Gloversvil" after himself and also donated $2,000 to create an academy for boys at this new site where modern day Gloversville High School stands today. William Dickson bought de Witt's interest in 1825 and continued to run the mill until 1830 when he sold all his holdings to James Fenton III who renamed it Gouverneur Mills Incorporated with its present name effective March 4th 1830). On July 14th 1840 five men – Elijah Dearborn, Isaac Norris (a Quaker), John Armstrong (a lawyer), Ezekiel Kline (an alien) and Abram Smith set out from Syracuse aboard HMS "Eagle" bound for Niagara Falls via Kingston on Lake Erie but failed to make landfall due to bad weather conditions They reached Ontario over night on July 15th 1840 just before dawn arriving at Kingston about noon next morning where they were met by Major General Ambrose Ewing with orders to proceed against Niagara Falls This group including Elijah Dearborn succeeded in reaching their destination However Kline fell off Eagle during their journey leaving Armstrong behind He perished along with several others when Eagle wrecked near Canandaigua Bay on October 7th 1840 while attempting landing There are still questions surrounding what happened that night Among those lost that evening were two very important members of Mohawk society - Elijah Dearborn and Abram Smith A few weeks later another party led by Captain Henery Thornburgh reached Toronto safely without incident On November 6th 1840 Henry Miller established mills at Welland Dam across the river from Niagara Falls using water power obtained from nearby turbines This began what would become known as The Great Western Water Power Company A map dated December 7th 1850 shows six mills across entire Upper Canada operated by Gouverneur Mills Ltd., Gouvernerie et Cie., Fleming Manufacturing Company Limited & Stevenson’s Mill No 2 At present only two remain: Stevenson's Mill No 2 & Gouverneor Mills Incorporated Today both operate independently as family businesses With exports up 145% Since 2000 Gossipersvill has been home to one or more artists every summer performing arts events throughout agriculture fields local artisans produce many items found locally such as baskets weavers handbags purses hats umbrellas mugs jugs

The Village has experienced many changes over its history including being abandoned during World War II as part of an effort to save critical war materials; becoming known for its vibrant art scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s; experiencing a resurgence in popularity in recent years as a result of various events or projects organized by locals or sponsored by civic organizations; and finally experiencing significant gentrification over the past few decades as more people move into Gloversville from surrounding villages or townships
