Groversville is a town in New York County, northeast of the city of New York City. The population was 10,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Gloversville was one Isaac Glover who arrived in 1788 and named it after his home country, Gloverstown in Pennsylvania. In 1814, James Kapp bought six hundred acres (2 km²) of land west of Gloversville from Nicholas Witcomb for $10 per acre. In 1835, George Witherspoon donated two thousand acres (8 km²) to the town for perpetual use as a public square and school lot. George Washington Halford founded Halford & Company tannery on Main Street between State Road 10A and 12A in 1868. The company became one of the largest tanneries in America. The first post office was established here on November 24th, 1881 by Cyrus Belden with the name "Groversville." On December 6th, 1888, Charles Ewing opened Gouverneur's Tobacco Store on North High Street which became one of the most successful businesses in Gloversville history until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1896-97 John Hickey operated a grocery store at 204-206 Main Street which failed to make much money but Provided employment to many people during those tough economic times In 1912 local entrepreneur Harry Levine started a small shoe store called "Hi Ho Shoes" on South Market Street which grew into an empire taking over other stores until closing its doors in 1976 . On October 25th 1915 local grocer Edward Jaffe opened Jaffe's grocery store at 527 Main Street which became one of Utica's most important stores until it closed its doors also in 1976 . Finally we come to our current era where we have gained some notoriety recently with our new construction project that began last year known as "The George Washington Inn". This complex will consist off five buildings that will provide housing for up to eighty people who will work various aspects within this small town such as farming produce or manufacturing products
Gloversville was founded in 1786 by Nicholas Glovers and his wife, Hannah. The first post office was established in 1807. In 1847, the town passed an ordinance establishing a school system. In 1865, the town became a village and in 1876, it amalgamated with nearby Unadilla to form Gloversville-Unadilla.
