Gloversville is a small town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,883 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the English word " Glover" which means "a piece of cloth with a hole in it so that the threads can be seen." The first settler in Gloverville was James Glover who located his home on the northeast corner of present-day Court and Main Streets in 1786. In 1802, John Cline established a gristmill on the east side of Court Street. In 1805, Ebenezer Hogg began to cultivate corn here and by 1830 had built four buildings for use as stores and a sawmill. By 1835, three-fourths of all produce grown in Westchester County was products of Gloverville mills; two years later Noe Fuller opened a grocery store on Main Street. In addition to its role as an agricultural center, Gloverville also became known for its manufacturing capabilities during this time period. In 1840, Jno Wulfsohn erected an average costumed facility called The Globe Theatre which would become one of the most popular entertainment venues in New York City until it closed its doors in 1937. Other prominent businesses associated with Gloverville during this time include: Slippery Rock Cheese (1842), Grosvenor Glass Company (1849), Aiken & Son Cigar Manufacturing Co.(1868), and Mayflower Paper Mill (1872). During World War II, much production took place at the paper mill due to wartime needs such as war bonds being printed there. After the war ended, many factories went out of business including Gloversville Paper Mill which closed down in 1975 but left behind many artifacts including their plant locomotive and other machines used at the mill day-to-day operations until they were sold to local preservationists in 1984. Today there is still some evidence remaining from these days such as remnants of boilers still standing today insidethe old paper mill complex along with an interpretive trail made up of interpretive signs leading visitors back through history whilealso providing plentyof opportunities for day trips within walking distance!
