Glens Falls, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north bank of the Hudson River and is bordered by Albany to the east, Schenectady to the south, and Ithaca to the west. The town was first settled in 1795 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their new community Glenfiddich after their home country. Today, Glens Falls remains a small farming community with a focus on arts and culture. In addition to its downtown core which includes a library, art gallery, theater company and other cultural attractions, Glenfiddich has several smaller neighborhoods including Campbelltown (named for General James Campbell), Grosse Pointe North (home of Michigan State University) and Southside (the oldest black neighborhood in America). The history of Glens Falls can be traced back to when Scots-Irish immigrants arriving in what is now New York state began settling in this area in 1795. At that time it was part of Pennsylvania; however because of religious differences between Protestants and Catholics, many of these newcomers decided to name their new settlement Glenfiddich after their homeland – Scotland specifically. Over time some families moved away from this original location while others developed farms around what is now Glenfiddich Cemetery. By 1857 most of what is now Glens Falls had been developed as an agricultural village with about 150 residents living on large lots near farmland east of Uptown Road. In 1881 William Hickey converted part of his farm into an academy for freed slaves known as Hickey's School for colored students; today this school still exists as one of only two similar educational institutions remaining in America operated by African Americans that are not Ivy League schools like Yale or Columbia University. In 1923 Glens Falls became incorporated as a Village under the guidance of Mayor Walter Farrelly Sr.; he served until his death in 1951. During Farrelly's tenure various businesses were founded such as Smith's grocery store which anchored Main Street during its early years and later became Macy's department store before being replaced by Sears ground zero during the late 1960s; also during Farrelly's timeGlenfalls got its start getting national attention when American Bandstand made its appearance here along with other local events throughout central New York State culminating with the first world championship wrestling matches held here back then at Nassau Coliseum—a memory that still impacts many people today due to all that has come since then including Barack Obama’s visit HERE last October! In 1958 voters approved amendments making Glens Falls one day long without having to go through election day due process like most villages did at that time–something unheard of within our society then or anyplace else for that matter! This unique concept didn't last long though as following same year Wanda Sykes moved into town from upstate Buffalo Heights which had been her home since childhood!
