What is the history of the Glen Cove National Guard? The Glen Cove National Guard was first organized in 1898. It has grown over time and currently numbers around 2,500 members. The National Guard is a unit within the United States Military. It provides support for national security and defense purposes. The guard also gathers intelligence on terrorism and other threats to public safety. The Glen Cove National Guard has been through many changes since it was founded. In 1898, it was composed of men from New York City only. By 1938, it had increased to include soldiers from all across the United States. Additionally, women were allowed to join the guard in 1973. After 9/11, there was an increase in calls for the National Guard to be called into service. However, this request was denied by President George W Bush because they did not meet his standards for being a mobilizable force at that time. Today, the Glen Cove National Guard operates under the control of Joint Forces Command Northeast region which is headquartered in Dover Township, New York (USA). The New York National Guard was founded on April 25, 1795. It was the first national guard of the United States and played a critical role in the early days of our country. The unit was disbanded in 1815, but it re-emerged in 1863 as part of the Union army during the American Civil War. After the war ended, the New York National Guard continued to play an important role in our society until its disbandment in 1920.
Glen Cove is a small town in the Town of Northport on Long Island, New York. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Queens. The first Europeans to visit Glen Cove were Dutch traders in 1624. A documentary record from that year shows that there were three houses and one mill in what is now Glen Cove. The first settler was Nicholas Dongan who arrived from Ireland in 1627 with his family. Mr. Dongan had land grants from the Governor of Long Island and built a house on Point Judith (now West Islip) beach which he called "Dongan's Mill." In 1647, John Smith discovered land for sale northeast of present-day Glen Cove on Calico Hill Road and named it after himself, Smith's Mill Pond or "Glen Cove Beach". By 1764, there were 11 households and 5 families living in what became Glen Cove Township. In 1812, James Cayuga purchased 640 acres north of present day Glen Cove from Samuel Uniacke for $6,000. He started a sawmill and gristmill here which continue to operate to this day. In 1814, when Act No 2 of 1814 created Kings County, NY; part of Nassau County; and included all of modern-day Queens County including present-day Glen Cove Township within Kings County; Cayuga donated land west of East Meadow Creek for public school purposes only . This tract later became home to Glenside Academy (now Midtown Campus). The village name originated with Captain Benjamin Cooke who gave it as a gift to Captain Nathaniel Warren during their fishing trip off Newtown Creek near Great Bay Harbor on November 3rd 1825 while they were anchored off Sandy Hook Light (). Benjamin Cooke's Landing Site remains an active commercial fishing ground today located just south east corner Main Street between North Haven Drive & Oak Cliff Lane." -Wikipedia

Glen Cove is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Glen Cove was founded in 1868 by Presbyterian missionaries, and it became an incorporated village in 1915. In 1937, the village merged with the neighboring hamlet of North Glen Cove to form a new municipality. On July 16th, 1959, a fire burned through most of Glen Cove leaving many homes and businesses completely destroyed including one Presbyterian Church which still stands today. Glen Cove is best known for its role in World War II as a strategic airbase used by both the United States Army Air Corps (USAAF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF). It also produced some powerful automobiles such as Cadillac Eldorado sedans and Buick Regal coupes. The area now called "Old Glenn Cove" grew up around this airfield during World War II because much of it was bought from local farmers who lost their land to development or were forced out by bombing raids.
Glen Cove was a small town in upstate New York until the late 1800s, when it became an important stop on the Erie Canal. The town was first settled by Scots settlers in 1788 and grew rapidly because of its position at the mouth of the river. By 1814, Glen Cove had a population of 1,200 people. In 1827, construction began on the Erie Canal and by 1830, Glen Cove had become one of the canal's most important terminals. The town declined after railroad development took over in the early 20th century and by the 1940s, it had only 100 residents remaining. However, since then there has been a gradual revival of Glen Cove with new businesses coming to town and efforts to promote tourism.
