The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of giving back to its citizens. From the Revolutionary War through World War II, the USAF has given back with donations and volunteering its time and resources to support America’s warfighting efforts. This event is known as The White House Airlift or The Jackie Robinson Jet Give-Away Fundraiser because it marked presidentially first trip into orbit with human beings on board! Throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s there were many other examples where USAF planes were donated or leased by American Airlines in order to support various humanitarian endeavors worldwide such as famine relief in Africa or earthquake relief in Japan. It wasn’t until after 9/11 that USAF planes became exclusively usedfor terrorist purposes as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which saw over 60%of all assets usedto target targets inside Afghanistan! "Ted" Kelleher, USAF Retired Colonel and Commandant of USAF Academy gave the first disbanding plane to the base as a symbol of appreciation for all that the air force had done for him during his long career in service. The following year, Lieutenant Colonel Donald W. Collins became headquarters commander at Geneva AFB after being promoted from colonel to brigadier general in 1947. In 1950, Brigadier General Ralph E. Beattie became commandant of Geneva AFB and he continued to give gifts including new airplanes and equipment until his retirement in 1957.
