Garden City is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Garden City was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1684. In 1785, the English took over and began to clear land for expansion into this region. The town name of Garden City was chosen in honor of Sir James Smith, who purchased 3/8ths interest in the town from its original proprietor for £100 on July 8, 1785. In 1824, traders and travelers postulated about a location where business could be conducted with ease across the Housatonic River because it had no natural obstacles between it and other settlements such as Syracuse or Niagara Falls. After much research by surveyors and others involved in early development of what would become Garden City (including William Lyon Mackenzie), they recommended that a route be developed eastward from Buffalo that crossed under the now-defunct Mohawk·Oneida Railroad tracks near present day Elmira while still remaining within limits of Niagara Falls; this became known as "the routing." In 1825–26 construction began on Albany Road which crossed under the new railroad tracks; Garden city proper soon followed suit with an existing crossroads called Court House Square being renamed "Garden City Square" in commemoration of this event. In 1830 Governor David Yates ordered all military forces out of New York State until after his inauguration which occurred on March 4th; however due to disagreements among General John Armstrong's officers about whether troops should remain eastbound or westbound based upon their respective communities' needs (Garden City wanted troops to stay eastbound so as not to block off their community's access to trade), Lieutenant Colonel George Aiken suggested moving military units around so they could provide cover for local farmers during battles taking place farther north against British forces advancing downriver towards Kingston; eventually this plan failed when General Armstrong changed his mind about continuing the war effort and ordered his troops back home without awaiting order from Yates. The first school was built in what is now Elmira between Meeting House Square and Great Western Avenue just south of Broadway – one school building served both Townspeople and residents inside and outside of GardenCity square until 1853 when a gristmill became operational providing enough flour for all necessary baking products needed by locals as well as exporting to neighboring towns such as Scranton and Wilkesbarre during times when those towns lacked flour mills due to prohibition laws prohibiting importation of alcohol into New York state at that time. In 1830–31 Reverend Elijah Hicks started up Congregational services serving both inside/outside of town square across from today’s Presbyterian Church before leading services there beginning November 25th 1830 before moving indoors January 1st 1832 following a storm damage same week service there moved outdoors February 2nd following another storm damage also same week . Reverend Hicks did not return to congregation until 1861 after becoming pastor at First Presbyterian Church #2 located today on Main Street just south side park across street from high school he founded there starting then Continuing services weekly thruout year ever since Saturday evening ended & service begins again Thurday morning following afternoon recess @ 6 PM Rev Dr Hicks died suddenly while preaching sermon at First Presbyterian Church #2 on October 12th 1870 age 53 years old
