The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and named after Garden-en-Ville (now Utrecht in the Netherlands), where one of the largest orange groves in Europe was situated. The first permanent settler arrived in 1627 and called it "Garden City". In 1785, when Albany became a state capital, Garden City joined with other settlements to form the new Albany County. In 1814, Anna Seward married George Washington halbert and they moved to Albany to be near their husband's presidential inauguration. Halbert had been one of the founders of Albany County and served as its first treasurer from 1811 until his death in 1820; he also served as speaker of the New York State Assembly from 1815 to 1830 and as attorney general from 1830 to 1837. During World War I, Garden City was home to over 20% of all American troops who deployed overseas (). After the war ended there were increased calls for military housing within our borders due largely to shortages caused by demobilization following World War I. However these demands did not result in any growth or development within Garden City but rather outside efforts such as shopping malls that sprang up throughout upstate New York during this time period which have continued into present day. Garden City is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Garden City was first settled in 1785 by Scottish immigrants. The town name has been spelled "Garden" since 1854 and "New York" since 1871. It was previously known as Saratoga Springs and Schenectady Township. The Town of Garden City was created on February 14, 1888 from parts of the Village of White Plains. The first settler in Garden City were Alexander Fleming and his wife Isabella Campbell who arrived on January 15, 1785 aboard the ship Nisqually with 20 other passengers from Edinburgh, Scotland. They named their new land after Mount Vernon in Virginia where they had been vacationing with their children while their father served as Governor of Virginia. In 1787 the Campbells founded what became the first Presbyterian church in America - Christ Church which still stands today on Main Street in Garden City. In 1811 John Morse established a cotton plantation near what is now Watertown which became one of the most important cotton plantations in upstate New York due to its location near Buffalo Bayou and its access to markets outside Albany and New Rochelle (the port for goods entering into North America). When Morse died his estate passed through several hands before it came into private ownership by Cornelius Vanderbilt who renamed it Commodore Vanderbilt'senterpriselandin1842 after himself- creatingoneofthelargestamontriptycenothernewYorkiscityuntilthenomencedHollywoodlandin1926).
