He named it for his garden at Kensington Palace in London which he had visited while on his honeymoon with Lady Elizabeth Butler (1587-1649). In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed this land into a large township called "Hempstead". He named it for himself because he found hemp seeds thereabouts. The first post office was established in 1796 and remained open until 1876. In 1814 Alexander Hamilton moved from Gowanus Canal to this location and started what would become the largest cotton plantations in America east of West Virginia; these were called "TheHamilton Cotton Mills" or simply "Hamilton". A group of Dutch immigrants who had been living here since 1654 began farming tobacco during the Revolutionary War. When their crop failed they turned to hogshead production but this too failed due to lack of rainwater runoff onto their fields from hills in neighboring townships–a problem that still persists today! Finally they decided to try growing coffee beans which became very successful hereabouts but also caused some environmental damage as coffee beans are heavy water drinkers and can sucking up large amounts of nutrients from soil & water combination making them susceptible to weed control problems over time—the potential consequences being loss of income & habitat for wildlife both aboveground & beneath ground! For all these reasons many people continue to grow coffee right up through present day although much less extensively than when coffee was first introduced:)
