Fulton was a small town in Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 514 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the City of Syracuse. Fulton was founded in 1800 by Nicholas Biddle and his family as a trading post on the Mohawk River. In 1825, Biddle donated land to the village for its first school, church, and cemetery. In 1825, the first steamboat on the Great Lakes was built at Fulton, transporting passengers to Niagara Falls. In 1835, John D. Rockefeller established his tomato plantation in nearby McKee Heights. The area now known as Rockefeller Center was developed around this agricultural land. In 1865, General George McClellan called for American forces to cross the Hudson River into New York to fight in the Civil War. The town of Fulton quickly grew large enough to support military activity and became an important center for trade and industry during the war years. After the war, Fulton began to decline as commercial activity shifted from agriculture to manufacturing and services. However, it remained an important community until its merger with neighboring Schenectady in 1987.
