Fulton was a small village in Ulster County, New York, United States before the American Revolution. It lies on the border of Fulton and Westchester counties. The population of Fulton at the 2010 census was 682. The first European to set foot in what is now Fulton was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who landed there in 1524 on his way from Italy to explore North America. He named it Nolita after an Italian woman who had accompanied him on his voyage. In 1614 Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts issued a proclamation calling for all Englishmen living in that colony to come over and help build a new capital city, which they did in 1620 at Boston. In 1784 the town of Fulton became part of the newly created county of Westchester when those two counties were combined under the Directory System. In 1815 it lost its charter as a village because of low population growth and lack of economic opportunity; however it regained its charter as an incorporated town in 1821 when it annexed part of neighboring Hudson Valley Village (which also lost its charter). At various points during its history Fulton has been known as "Fultonburgh," "Dunsborough," "Hudson Valley Village," and "Westchester County." In 1898 the name was changed back to Fulton after Joseph Egan, Jr., one-time mayor and then Town Clerk of Brooklyn replaced George Washington Irving as namesake for what he perceived as an honorific title given only to men who had made significant contributions to their communities. Today, most people refer to themselves simply as "Fultonites." The community has preserved much of its early architecture including several churches dating back to 1785–87 still standing within walking distance from each other; some 3 miles (5 km) long by 2 miles (3 km) wide are also still extant with extensive original features dating back more than 200 years ago including spacious public square fronting 4 streets flanked by 2 sets of Georgian style brick buildings housing stores and residences; these have been well cared for over time but remain largely unchanged except for minor updates or repairs required occasionally due to weather or damage caused byandals or natural disasters like hurricanes or floods; today's downtown district is home not just to stores but also many cultural events such as art exhibitions and music concerts taking place throughout year
