The Fulton Regiment of the New York Army National Guard was organized on October 15, 1861. On December 12, 1861, the regiment was redesignated as the Fulton Infantry Regiment and Colonel John P. Ellicott became its first colonel. The regiment served in various engagements during the Civil War, including service in the Battle of Bull Run and battle of Fredericksburg. The regiment lost a total of 113 soldiers killed, wounded or missing in action between 1861 and 1865.
Fulton is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 7,778 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest county in New York by land area and has the smallest population of any municipality in New York City. The name is derived from General James Wilkinson's landing on September 14, 1795 while surveying the site for a new battlefield between Great Britain and France. The first settler in what would become Fulton was Nicholas Lyons who arrived in 1796. In 1802, John Lyon moved his family to what became Fulton from Canandaigua Township, Niagara County. A post office called Fulton was established in 1806 and changed its name to Fulton on November 6, 1815. The village of Fulton was platted in 1829 and became part of the Town of Rochester after that community failed to gain statehood as an independent village until 1860. In 1830, Ironclad USS "New Orleans" hit a rock on Lake Ontario which sunk her with all hands including Captain George Washington who commandeered her for his military campaign against Native Americans at Stonington Landing on Long Island Sound; this event helped spur development around her wreck site known today as Governors Island National Park (NY). Famed steamboat captain Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land adjacent to Governors Island so that immigrants could establish homes without fear of being roped into slavery or kidnapped during their voyage across North America aboard ships captained by white men such as Commodore John Horseshoe and Commodore Matthew Perry. This act allowed many people who might have been deported back home during times of political unrest or war to find safe haven here instead. As a result of this significant military engagement and its impact on local community life for years to come, the town has earned its reputation as "The Place Where Custer Died". Today, much like when it was founded nearly 170 years ago by Nicholas Fulton and his family from Georgia – Fulton continues to thrive thanks to its vibrant economy and supportive community spirit."
