Fulton, New York is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fulton was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1638. The name derived from French "Forthurie" meaning "fortress". In 1814, when General James Ketchum unsuccessfully attacked Canada's eastern border with what is now Fulton County, he destroyed a fort there and named the settlement after himself. After the war ended and hostilities subsided, Ketchum moved his military forces to what is now Albany and renamed them Fort Clinton; however, this fortification only lasted for three months before it was again destroyed by Canadian forces under John Graves Simcoe on October 14th of that year. A new forts were built at both locations (Fulton in 1825 andClinton in 1827), but they too were destroyed by Canadian forces within a few years of their erection. In 1830 Anthony Phillips founded the village of Philipsburg east of present-day Fulton; Phillipsville would later be absorbed into Fulton. The post office located at Clinton operated from 1793 to 1865; during this time it served as an important outlet for goods coming into and out of upstate New York via Canandaigua Lake. In 1868 two additions were made to the town: One at West Ferry Road (now Sylvan Street) which housed a grocery store while another addition took place on South Ferry Road (now Elmira Avenue) which housed two schoolhouses used until 1898 when all schools were consolidated into one building known as Academy High School). In 1870s residents began moving out of Fulton due to increasing prices for land near Buffalo because saltpetre production increased in that area around Buffalo Creek so much that people became desperate to find other sources for food. By 1880 about half of the population had left for good citing social unrest among those remaining as well as competition from larger towns such as Schenectady or Troy along with better transportation options available closer to major cities like Buffalo or Rochester than where they lived originally>.
