Freeport, New York is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 21,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Nassau County. The name Freeport was given to the town by Cornelius Vanderbilt because he found gold and silver in the area during his exploration of the region in 1825. The first settlers arrived in 1824 and soon founded a small trading post on what is now known as Main Street. This early community flourished due to its natural resources: abundant freshwater lakes and streams, rich coal seams, and a sandy beach for swimming and sunbathing. In 1829, Commodore John Dromgoole chartered a wharf at Freeport for shipping supplies from Britain to American ships based in New York City. By 1830, freighters transporting goods from Long Island had brought an estimated $1 million worth of metal ore and other minerals to market each year at Freeport's port. During the 1830s and 1840s, sugarcane farming played an important role in Freeport's economy; however, this industry gradually declined during the late 19th century as transportation improved and new crops became available on more distant sites such as Westport or Mineola (now Mineola). By 1901 there were only five families living in Freeport—all farmers—and six businesses employing only thirteen workers reported sales totaling just under $2 million annually. However, during World War IFreeport began seeing increased activity due to its strategic location near Great Lakes warships escorting Allied troops across Lake Ontario; by 1922 it had become one of America's most important naval bases afloat with over 150 buildings erected along main streets including many warships moored off shore for repairs or operations. In 1932 Freeport gained city status but experienced rapid decline following World War II which saw military installations move out while civilian employment decreased by half due to wartime rationing measures that applied equally to both sexes. However some new development happened during this time such as when local businessmen purchased land along Railroad Avenue east of downtown for what would become known as The Park developed into one of Nassau County's most successful shopping districts - remains today known as Downtown Freeport

In 1924, it merged with what had been called East Meadow to form the present-day Freeport Township/Cemetery District. During World War II, Freeport played an important role in the production of munitions by producing salt water plants and other industrial equipment used in manufacturing weapons and other munitions. After the war ended in 1945, many businesses closed but some continued operations until they were taken over by new owners or absorbed into larger companies after 1970s recession hit America hardest during that time period

In 1824, the first steamboat ever built reached Freeport. The boat was called the "Cleveland" and it transported goods between Buffalo and New York City.
