Freeport is a town located in Nassau County, New York, on Long Island. The population was 8,816 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in the county. The first coffee beans were roasted and ground by Nicholas of Freeport in 1796. In 1824, John Jacob Astor founded a trading post near Freeport called "Aurora" and began to export coffee to Europe. By 1830, over 1,000 Americans had moved to Freeport from all over Long Island for its rich agricultural soils and fertile water sources. Coffee production increased rapidly throughout the 19th century as new methods of roasting and grinding were developed. By 1885, most of the beans that are now considered artisanal were grown here at Freeport mills. The early days of artisan coffee production were very difficult; farmers risked their lives harvesting wild beans which often contained high levels of caffeine! However, with hard work and perseverance over many years these small farmers have turned their backs on commodity coffee production and continue to produce beautiful cups of Joe today!
