Freeport, New York is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chenango County and the most populous town in that county. Freeport is also home to the Freeport-McMoran aluminum smelter and now one of the largest open-pit mine operations in the world. The history of Freeport can be traced back to 1824 when Nicholas Biddle platted what would become Freeport on land he had purchased from John Walsh. The first post office was established in 1828, and by 1840 there were seventeen businesses operating within what would eventually become Freeport village. In 1847 Samuel Tryon opened a gristmill here which became one of the largest flour mills in upstate New York; Tryon's mill still operates as a museum today. In 1868 David Hogg started operations at his paper factory on Main Street; it remains one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Freeport today. By 1893 there were 25 businesses operating within what would eventually become Freeport village - this number grew to over 100 by 1909! In 1896 Jellico Glass Company opened its doors here as well - becoming one of North America's earliest glass companies. During World War II, many residents served in military service including 3rd Lt.(A) Harry Daugherty who fought off Japanese forces at Okinawa during 1945; 2nd Lt.(JG) Carl Friesen who served with distinction as part of Operation Market Garden; Sgt.(E) Emmett O'Neill who was awarded posthumousthe Medal of Honor for his actions during malaria campaign in Burma; Pvt(Maj) Clarence Epps who distinguished himself while serving with Company G (3/10th Infantry Regiment), 9th Infantry Division during World War I... etc etc etc.. In 1956 Mayor Homer Paine announced plans for an airport which would serve both local farmers and travelers coming through Chenango County on their way to or from Syracuse and Buffalo... finally we had our own airport! The airport currently serves as a base for helicopter services providing essential access to local farmers markets and other rural areas throughout Chenango County!
