The Freeport Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's (USAF) 7th Wing, which was activated on October 1, 1947. The wing has been stationed at the base sinceactivated and currently operates two squadrons of jets: the 422nd Test Squadron and 431st Bombardment Squadron. The wing also contains two historic airfields: Grumman Field #1 which was used during World War II as a training ground for fighter pilots; and Grumman Field #2 which served as a bomber training field from 1941-1945. Grumman Field #1 was also home to Republic Aviation Corporation's (RAC) Long Island Airport, one of New York City's four commercial airports. The other three were LaGuardia, TWY-LH; Earle Fenton, NYF-5; and John F Kennedy International Airport in Queens, NYJ. In addition to its operational units, the USAF also maintains an inactive unit at Freeport AFB - the 602d Airlift Wing (Airlift/Refueling), responsible for providing criticallift transportation support to military installations worldwide through their Boeing 747 Airlifts. The wing is organized into eight detachments with five squadrons each: three Wings – C-130 Hercules haulers (HC-130E/Fs), AEC E-3 Sentry Aurora Warning aircraft and KC-135 Stratotanker tanker flights; one Group – Paveway IV airborne early warning aircraft squadron with Lockheed Martin EC-135D Skywarns; one detachment – EMBrae KC-46 Pegasus tanker flights supporting Operation Inherent Resolve aerial refueling missions over Iraq and Syria); all these groups are under command of Combatant Command Air Forces - Middle East Region commander for all seven wings located at Freeport AFB.

The Freeport Air Force Base Gift History began in 1948 when the United States Air Force stationed an air squadron at Freeport. The Squadron gift shop was opened in 1949 and eventually became a general store for the base. In 1951, it was decided that the gift shop should be open 365 days a year, which it remains to this day. The gift shop is now known as the Museum of Freedom and Democracy. In 1957, Commodore James S. Gilmore donated land to the Freeport Army Ammunition Plant, which then became known as the Commodore Gilmore Park. The first golf course on Freeport AFB was built there in 1959. In 1967, we established our own school system called “Freeport High School” which still exists today!
Freeport, New York is a city in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 102,651 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Schoharie County and ninth-largest city in New York State. It lies on Long Island Sound north of Manhattan and east of Buffalo, the only major city on that island. The first European settlers arrived in 1624 by sailing down the Hudson River from what is now Albany. The Dutch founded a trading post here called Fort Nassau in 1657; they abandoned it after losing an open battle to English forces at Hempstead Plains near present-day Freeport. In 1764, British colonists established a fort at creek mouth on Long Island Sound and named it Fort George after King George III's Admiral John Graves Simcoe who had helped defeat French forces at Saratoga four years earlier. The British garrison was disbanded in 1765 but its name continued to be used for more than a century as Freeport emerged as one of America's most important commercial ports and seaports for exporting goods to Europe and Asia (and later became home to two universities). During World War II, Freeport was a key military supply center for the Allies during their Battle of Normandy; its harbor enabled them to bring food supplies through the Channel Islands into England while Allied bombers destroyed German war industries vital to Nazi Germany's war machine. Afterward, Freeport slowly regained its former economic vitality as an industrial center catering both to domestic consumers and international tourists with its world-renowned shipyards (such as those built by John Denny & Sons), offshore wind energy development (resulting in much property damage along Great Lakes shorelines), and other businesses linked with maritime culture such as fishing vesselsikarpers/catches (the predominant form of travel until recently) Today Freeport remains an active port serving both local residents and travelers alike with ferry service between mainland New York City via Stony Point Lighthouse or Babylon Ferry Terminal upriver from downtown; Amtrak services are available from Penn Station nearby; kayaking is popular among locals looking for access to Long Island Sounds' many estuaries; dog walking is also popular among visitors interested in exploring this substantial undeveloped area full of rich history—both human and environmental—an often overlooked gem on our landscape

The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Freeport were French Huguenots who began trading there in 1723. By 1786, the Dutch had also established a trading post here and by 1806, it had become a small town with 5 stores and 20 residents. In 1822, the U.S. Congress passed an act establishing Freeport as a port on Long Island Sound for warehouses and other purposes; this act led to its growth as a commercial center over the next few decades. The town's initial economic development was based on shipbuilding and fishing; during World War I, Freeport became one of America's most important naval bases because of its contributions to both naval warfare and munitions production. During the 1920s and 1930s, Freeport experienced significant expansion due to its position as an important transportation hub for goods flow between Long Island Sound and points westward such as Buffalo (New York), Detroit (Michigan), Milwaukee (Wisconsin), Chicago (Illinois), Quincy (Massachusetts) and more than 100 smaller ports along the East Coast of North America which made it one of the most heavily visited places in those days. In 1951, when Nassau County was created fromKings County,[2] Freeport became one of its largest villages with over 1,500 residents within 2 miles of downtown where shopping centers including Sears & Roebuck occupied much of that area today while several hundred housing units have been built since then around downtown square which has seen periodic redevelopment schemes including creating new streetscapes that mimic those in Amsterdam or Rotterdam or even adding green roofs onto older buildings in order to achieve LEED certification status from the US Green Building Council[3],[4].
