Fredonia, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 12,913 at the 2010 census. Fredonia is located on the Finger Lakes east of Hudson Valley and north of Ithaca. It borders Sawmill Township to the south and west, Clinton Township to the north and east, and Tarrytown to the northwest. The first Europeans to enter what is now Fredonia were French colonists who established a trading post there in 1664. In 1714 German settlers arrived from Pomerania and founded a settlement called Dahlem on the western bank of Mohawk River. These early settlers started farming land around what is now downtown Fredonia in 1724. The first school was built in downtown Fredonia in 1727 by Reverend Abraham Zimmerman. In 1809 a group of Yankees settled near what is now North Avenue and Main Street before moving into their current location on South Main Street two years later. In 1812 John Slingerland bought 6 acres (2 hectares) along present-day Main Street for $1,000 from Augustus Dearborn of Schenectady because he wanted to create an agricultural community with industry nearby for his own benefit as well as that of others who would soon settle thereabouts This area became known as Slingerland Park after Mr. Slingerland's death in 1846 . Today it forms part of downtownFredonia . In 1825 Nicholas rodschool moved from Peekskill into what is now Downtown Fredonia when he purchased 1 acre (0 ha) between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Streets from Nicholas School trustees; it later became home to Stuyvesant High School ). Easton Academy also resided here until its closure in 1907 due largely to overcrowding at its predecessor buildings on Fifth Avenue ). By 1830 alluvial deposition had deposited about 8 feet (2 m) deep over most or all surface streets within 2 miles (3 km) radius of where present-day main street meets Fifth avenue ; however this subsidence stopped immediately following establishment of Columbia University here circa 1830). A new courthouse was erected on First Avenue between Third Street/Church Road & Fourth Street/Morningside Road during 1830s by order of Governor George Ewing Sr.; prior thereto an old building used by Albany Assembly Buildings stood nearby . The college burned down during an eruption at Niagara Falls on September 14,1845 which destroyed much property including both College campus & Old Capitol building ; only small amount remaining today A new courthouse was erected again beginning in 1850 but never completed due to lack funding; it served as a model for many subsequent courthouse projects throughout northeast NY thru out history For many years Agricultural Hall served as primary schoolhouse while Courthouse underwent various reconstruction/demolition efforts; finally Courthouse Annex opened in 1971 serving mainly municipal functions until 2003 when reopening pending reactivation resulted ..... Finally vestiges remaining today include: original College campus Quadrangle still standing next door plus 3 story brickAdministrative Building still standing next door containing courtroom facilities utensils etc., Original Court House annex also still standing.. Downtown Fredonia has become one major commercial center for eastern New York thanks largely to its location close to Cornell University . Many stores have been built since Downtown Fredonica began receiving serious development attention starting with the opening upnorth adjoining Sawmill Township which led directlyto increased retail traffic through DowntownFredonia itself without actually going through Sawmill township - adding even more jobs & income back onto those businesses!

Fredonia is a town in the Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The name is from the German word "Friedrichstadt". The first white settler in Fredonia was Henry De Witt who arrived in 1795. He married Maria de la Salle and moved to what is now Tioga County in 1800. In 1805, he founded the village of Fredonia on High Street on a tract of land which he purchased from David Prentice. It functioned as a small town until 1861 when it became part of the new Town of Tioga. In 1823, George Stephenson built his famous locomotive engine called "Northern Spy" at an site east of present-day Fredonia on trackage taken from the Erie Canal. Northern Spy served as a model for John Bell's later locomotive engine called "Bellanca". Frederick Augustus Thayer donated land to create what is now Central Park in 1835 and named it after his wife Anna Thayer (1802-1868). In 1865, whenTioga County was formed, Fredonia became its capital and continued to serve that role until 1875 when all county offices were moved to Scranton. On February 14th 1915 during World War I Edward Munchin (1866-1953) who had been living in New York City came home and decided to move back into his family's old farmstead located northeast of Fredonia known then as Munchin's Farm after his father who had also grown up thereabouts; this farmstead still stands today with several original buildings still standing including one oldest structure dating back to circa 1840 having been built by Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr himself! After World War II Munchin sold most or all of his property except for about 4 acres which he kept for use as an open space adjacent to his farmstead until early 1973 when he ceased operations due to health reasons; this parcel remains undeveloped today next door to Munchin's Farmhouse!
