Fredonia, New York is a small town located in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,032 at the 2010 census. The Fredonia Historic District is a national historic district that covers parts of the town and several adjacent villages. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The earliest European settlers in what is now Fredonia were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1675. They built a trading post and two churches on the site of what is now downtown Fredonia. In 1793, the Township of Delaware purchased from the Dutch for $2,500 an acre (0.8 hectare) of land west of Main Street and south of Canoe Creek which became known as "New Buffalo". In 1815, when Erie County was created from part of Philadelphia County, New Buffalo became part of Erie County. Fredonia developed slowly until about 1830 when construction began on a gristmill on West Main Street which soon became one of the most important mills in the area. By 1840, there were six homes and sixty-eight families living in Fredonia; by 1850 it had grown to over one hundred families with seventy-six businesses including a sawmill and four stores. The first school was founded in 1837 and classes started every day except Monday because that day services were held atingo at Trinity Presbyterian Church across Canoe Creek where parents could bring their children to attend religious services while they worked outside or during school hours The commercial growth continued through the late 19th century with various stores opening up including two banks (the First National Bank and HSBC bank), three grocery stores (Johnstown Woolen Mill Store #1 & #3), four clothing stores (Fulton Clothing Company #1 & #2 & Jansen's Clothing Store #4), five druggists (Goudreau Drugstore #1 & 2 & McCoy's Drugstore #5), seven shoe retailers (Fulton Shoe Warehouse Company) as well as ten agricultural Implement dealers However, World War I interrupted this growth as many businesses closed due to wartime shortages .
