The regiment was soon augmented by artillery and cavalry units, and in 1881, the army established a branch of the Post Office Department called the “Army Depot School” at Fort Lafayette on Staten Island. That same year, General Nelson A. Miles organized the 1st Brigade of Infantry Regiment No. 9 of the First Infantry Division under command of Major General John J. Pershing at Camp Ripley on Staten Island. In 1903, General Norman Capps organized a brigade under command of Major General James Mott (later Lieutenant Colonel) for training at Camp Dodge on Staten Island. From 1907 to 1911, another brigade was formed from elements of Infantry Regiment No. 9 and became known as the “3rd Brigade” under Major General John Halleck (later BrigadierGeneral). With these formations available for service in World War I, American Expeditionary Forces war camped near Santiago de Cuba from 1917 to 1919; during this time, gifts were distributed among soldiers through messengers supervised by officers who acted as censors with responsibility for detecting any untoward items or behavior within camp vicinity including gambling halls and brothels which could lead to turpitude or criminal activity among troops serving in European theaters of war After returning home from World War I in November 1919, American Expeditionary Forces moved their encampment eastward along Highway 5 until they arrived adjacent to what is now Fort Wadsworth on Governors Boulevard in Fredonia on December 12th 1919 . Here they constructed a large outdoor barracks known as “Camp Wadsworth” which served as their permanent wartime headquarters until their move Site #2 next door (which is still standing) located behind present day Wagner Elementary School when it opened its doors to serve as an Army post exchange between New York City residents and soldiers stationed throughout America during World War II The first anniversary of Camp Wadsworth’s opening was celebrated with a grand ball hosted by Commodore Shreveport Lufkin & Jenretteello shipbuilding company chairman Samuel Copley Ransom Jr.. The costumed guests included Commodore Ransom himself along with his wife Mrs. Alice Neyman Ransom who sang selections from Lerner & Loewe's "Aida" whiledonated $5 per plate plus $1 each for members of the audience . There also occurred a visit from Ulysses S Grant who went golfing followed by dinner at Demarest's Merchants Hotel where he met again Mayor Fiorello La Guardia On October 2nd 1940 , German air bombers bombed Ft RandolphVA killing thirty-eight Americans servicemen while ninety-six civilians were injured including six children playing inside when bombs exploded just yards away Following this attack Governor Dewey declared martial law effective September 15th 1940 effective until further notice . This order authorized all state agencies subject thereto such as prisons and police forces to carry out whatever steps may be necessary Within seventy four hours thereafter any person found carrying arms or ammunition without proper identification or registration would be arrested and brought before Regional Military District Headquarters hereunder charged with treason against our country punishable by death etc... The Fredonia Volunteer Infantry Rifle and Cavalry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on October 15, 1861, at Fredonia, New York, and mustered in on November 1. The regiment fought in the Battle of Fredericksburg (December 13-14, 1862), the Battle of Chancellorsville (March 6-7, 1863), and the Battle of Gettysburg (July 8-9, 1863). After being disbanded on September 30, 1865, the regiment was reorganized as a cavalry unit and mustered into service again on October 15th.
Fredonia, New York is a small town located in Monroe County, New York. It is the only community in the county and it was founded in 1837. The population of Fredonia was 1,553 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what would become Fredonia was John Ramsay who settled on a tract of land that he purchased from the Seneca nation in 1836. He named his new town after his home country, France. From then until 1861, Fredonia was part of Albany County and was known as "theCapital of Monroe County." In 1881, Fredonia became part of Ontario County and remained so until 1959 when it merged with Monroe County to form today'sFredonia Township. In 1911, the post office changed its name to "Fenton" after James Fenton who served as Postmaster for many years. According to the 2010 census, there are 517 people living inFredonia Township which includes 610 households and an average size of 2.46 individuals per household. Of these residents, 248 (or 58%) are male and 224 (or 56%) are female. The median age is 47 years old; 24% are under the age of 40; 11% are between 41 and 50; 7% are 51 or older; 4% have no income and 1% reside below poverty line.
