Floral Park, New York is a small town in the Catskills region of upstate New York. It is located on the southern tip of Long Island and straddles the border of Queens and Brooklyn. The population was 8,836 at the 2010 census. The village of Floral Park proper lies east of where it now stands and includes what was once part of the town's residential area. The name "Floral Park" comes from two sources: One source says that early settlers in this area used to decorate their homes with wildflowers, so they called themselves "the Flower People." Another account suggests that early residents named their place after a spot in Central Asia where beautiful flowers grew abundantly. Whatever its origin, by 1851, Floral Park had a post office and began to take on more civic importance as an agricultural center. In 1864, Floral Park became an incorporated township with boundaries defined by Intervale Road (now Hawthorne Boulevard) to the south, Nassau County to the north, and Queens to the east. Large plantations were abandoned here during Reconstruction following America's Lost Cause War; however, some remaining slaveholders moved their families into new residences in nearby Forest Hills and Corona before finally giving up slavery in 1865. In 1925-1926, developer Julius Rosenwald donated 1 hectare (2 acres) of land adjacent to his own home at 777–779 Intervale Road for use as a public park that would become known as Floral Park National Monument today! Rosenwald also donated $1 million towards construction of one mile (1 kilometer) long Drive connecting his estate with various parks throughout New York City! Today over 180 acres (72 hectares) are included withinFloralPark proper while Manhattan borders both sides partially forming what has come to be known as Roosevelt Avenue which runs through both neighborhoods - making it easy for people walking or biking around our never too large but constantly changing parkland never quite sure where they're supposed to go! Floral Park is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. The community was founded in 1899 by John C. Willoughby and his family, who purchased 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Floral Drive from the city for $1,000. The name "Floral Park" comes from two sources: one is a description given by George Washington Carver to describe how he noted that on any given day there were more wildflowers in the park than trees, and the other comes from an early map of what was then Queens which depicted a park with both flower-filled bushes and trees on either side of Jamaica Avenue. The first residents of Floral Park were families of Dutch descent who immigrated to New York in 1820s. They soon erected traditionalDutch houses with gardens around them on large plots of land inherited from their ancestors. In 1829, they built one such house, called De Valkenbosch (the Eagle's Nest), which still stands today as a contributing property to Floral Park. In 1865, local farmer James Wadleigh donated 6 acres (2 ha) to become Floral Grove Cemetery; it remains one of the oldest cemeteries in Queens today. In 1898, John C. Willoughby purchased 2 acres (0.8 km2) at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Floral Drive for $1,000 after witnessing city officials burying bodies near Union Square during its construction boom days; he saw potential for this land as a natural oasis where people could Recreationally relax without having to worry about pollution or noise coming from nearby factories or services." A few years later another owner decided to call his new development Floral Park after getting inspired by Washington's statement that "a place set apart for nature is always attractive". He also named his property after some primary plants found throughout Queens – rosebushes being among them – believing that people would find this area relaxing due to its natural surroundings instead of being disturbed by busy streetscape features near their homes." The first housing developments in Floral Park were designed by architect Arthur Mather based on principles articulated in his book The English Garden: A Design Guide published in 1902.(Mather had come up with these concepts while working as an assistant surveyor under Surveyor General Sir Robert Peel.) initial designs included villas measuring up to sixty feet (18 m) wide × ninety feet (27 m) long × thirty-six inches deep (.96 m x .98m x 1 cm). During World War I many families chose not to move away from home due to wartime shortages so flowers continued blooming even though soldiers were absent; when war ended most homeowners returned but some stayed behind until 1948 when they sold their homes back into ownership."
