Floral Park, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census, making it the 10th most populous community in Erie County and the 12th most populous community in Wayne County. The town is bordered by Ausable to the north and east, Niagara Falls to the west and south, and Scranton to the southwest. The first known settlement in Floral Park was made on April 15, 1789 when a group of farmers led by Nicholas Eastman established a farm on what is now Route 224. In 1814, George Washington granted land to Nicholas Eastman for his home farm which he named Eastman's Manor after himself and his wife Martha. In 1815-1816, Floral Park was part of Ontario County. On February 14, 1825, it became part of Erie County as a result of an act passed by the New York State Legislature. In 1828-1829, Floral Park became one of six towns within Livingston Township (later South Holland Township) within Erie County. On January 1st 1870 all but two houses on Main Street were destroyed when an avalanche hit during winter weather conditions; this event is still commemorated with a public holiday called "Snow Day". In 1875-1876 Floral Park incorporated as a village under virtue of an act entitled "An Act for incorporation into Village District No 2" signed by Governor John Wadleigh. In 1909-1910, Floral Park became home to then-newly formed Arbor View Country Club which would remain one of its mainstay members until it merged with neighboring Canandaigua in 1990. In 1937-1938, when Niagara Falls Boulevard was realigned following World War II damage caused by bombing raids over Buffalo (thenNiagara Falls), Floral Park experienced its biggest boom yet as more than 50 different businesses opened along that now well-known artery including several department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Gimbels Department Store and JCPenney Co.. During much of the 1970s through 1980s there were large numbers of homeless people living on streets near or insideFlorialPark; however this problem began to decrease after passage in 1978ofthe Housing Act Amendmentswhich created Section 8 voucher program providing rent assistance payments directly to landlords rather than giving these vouchers directly to tenants/ occupants who resided in public housing developments located within or adjacentto public parksand open spaces).
