Floral Park, New York is a small town in Nassau County, New York. It was first settled by Dutch immigrants in the late 1700s. The community was named for Flora Thornsbury, who donated land to the town in 1821. Today, Floral Park is a residential and commercial center of the village of East Setauket. The area that now makes up Floral Park was originally part of Hempstead Township. On July 1, 1792, it became part of Nassau County as a result of the merger of several townships in the county. In 1821, Flora Thornsbury donated land to the town and set aside money for schools and other needs. The name "Floral Park" was chosen because flowers were rare then and there were many fern trees around the park today. In 1909, Floral Park opened its first post office which still operates today. At that time it consisted of just a few homes and a couple businesses along the main drag which is now US-1A (State Route 1A). The growth ofFloral Park led to development on both sides of US-1A with more homes being built on either side between 1910 and 1970s when most residents were commuters working out of nearby villages or Townsville or Farmingdale NJ & NY City respectively
