Endicott is a town in York County, New York, United States. The population was 7,384 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Endicott is known for its apple orchards and cheese manufacturing industries. The first Europeans to encounter the area were French traders who traveled along the Mohawk River in 1624-25. In 1764, Colonel George Washington's forces burned down a Dutch trading post at present-day Schenectady after raiding it for goods they had seized from their Dutch competitors. In 1802, landowner Nicholas Griggs sold 184 acres (70 hectares) of his farmstead for $100 to Lewis Cass as an inducement to purchase land east of Endicott from John Jacob Astor. The new town was named after Griggs' friend and patronNicholas Appert; Endicott is also the name of his farmhouse and some other buildings in town center today. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General William Howe's army burned down four farms around Endicott during a raid on that village; this event has been commemorated by a 4-foot high monument near Main Street in town now built with granite from local quarries. During World War II there was great activity around Endicott when munitions production took place at nearby Niagara Falls National Laboratory on Niagara Peninsula; many plants closed due to bombing raids but reopened after V-J Day because they were not targets of attack again until 1945. A small shopping center opened up near Main Street in downtown Endicott after being built next door to an old sawmill which used water power to turn lumber into building blocks until 1984 when electricity became available and mills stopped turning wood altogether due to environmental concerns about endangered Species like Black Cohosh found adjacent to them). On July 24th, 2007 local businessman/developer Paul Cianci announced he had purchased 106 acres (41 hectares) bordering Madison Road on both sides of I‑Hwy 9 south of downtownEndictt for development into what would become known as "Cianci Town Center." This project has since stalled with no sign yet from Cianci as either developer or builder despite numerous deadlines set by him including completion date late 2009 or early 2010
