The army has been present in Endicott for over 160 years, and the town’s history reflects that of its military community. The first soldiers to arrive in Endicott were volunteers from New York, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1812, a group of officers and men from Fort Niagara founded the First Regiment of Militia in Endicott. This regiment served as a guard at various sites in and around Endicott during the early 1800s. In 1825, General George Washington ordered the 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment to be raised and sent to Canada for service in the Canadian War of 1812. The regiment arrived in Endicott on October 12,1825, and was organized into two companies under command of Colonel John Wilkinson. The 2nd Battalion (now part of Company H)was also raised here and served with distinction throughout the war until it disbanded on December 14, 1827. In 1861, when America entered into the Civil War, many residents decided to become soldiers or volunteers. Despite this decision by many people, only a few hundred men actually served in our military during that conflict; most joined local militias instead. On July 11th 1861, General Alfred Terry ordered all male citizens aged 21 or older to join either our militia or serve out their three-year enlistment term as provided for by law at no cost to themselves (militia members could not vote). At this time there were about 775 enlisted men living within town limits; these men Volunteers “formed[ed] up” at home before being shipped off to fight against Confederate forces along with other towns throughout New York State. The army presence continued through Reconstruction after America’s return from Reconstruction following World War II; however it gradually diminished as more civilians chose not to sign up for service because they felt it would be too hard work or dangerous duty without any benefits/rewards offered them by government officials (eager reconstructionists wanted every able-bodied man volunteering). Today there are only a few active Military Detachments stationed here at Fort Drum across town due largely to budget limitations since we have an active population that does not need an Army garrison nearby just like other communities across New York City do today! With such a long history behind it - dating back over 160 years – one can imagine how muchArmy gifts have meant to individuals and families over those years! Endicott, New York is a small town located in westernchester county, New York. It was first settled by Germans in the late 1700s and became an industrial center after the discovery of oil in 1892. The area now known as Endicott was originally part of Westchester County. In 1814, the United States Congress created the township of Endicott on the west side of what is now Throop Road in Westchester County. On July 1, 1870, the following large towns were established within Endicott: Brookhaven (now part of Yonkers), Hastings-on-Hudson (later parts of Valhalla and White Plains), Kingston-on-Hudson (later parts of Scarsdale), Middletown (now part of Harrisonburg), and Putnam Valley (now part of Patchogue). In 1907, a group led by J.P. Morgan set out to find oil reserves in western New York. They found success but soon abandoned their efforts due to competition from other companies. However, some elements within Endicott continue to support petroleum production through petrochemical operations today including Shell Oil Company and ExxonMobil . The population increased rapidly during World War II due to soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Drum and neighboring military bases; however, it slowly declined thereafter until reaching its current level around 2000 when it began increasing again thanks to annexations by neighbouring towns such as Oneonta and Farmingdale
