The first European settlers in what is now Broome County were French traders and missionaries who came to America in 1624. They named their new land "New France." In 1664, English colonists arrived in search of new land to settle after concluding that they had exhausted all of North America east of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1713, Peter Schuyler became president of New Netherland and appointed John Winthrop as governor of Connecticut with authority over both provinces. On December 13, 1714, Schuyler granted an act unto James Watt for a town or village on this site (now known as Elmira). The town was named for his sister-in-law and mother-in-law Anne Hutchinson who was from Boston (then part of Massachusetts). On May 10th 1812 James Van Zandt formed a company called "Van Zandt & Company" to build a canal through Mohawk Valley from Lake Ontario to Albany Harbor on Long Island Sound. Because there was no river running through this area at that time, it took many years before anyone could actually build this canal. The first bridge across the Hudson River was built by van Zandt's company on July 8th 1825 just south of where it meets Interstate 95 today! In 1835 Congress passed an act authorizing Governor Andrew Johnson to establish schools throughout what are now upstate New York counties including Broome and Chemung Counties - which included territory now within Elmira Township. This act also authorized construction of roads and bridges connecting these rural areas with each other and with cities like Syracuse and Buffalo! The early residents here did quite well because there were few natural resources available so they turned to farming instead of hunting or fishing which helped make them wealthy quickly! It wasn't until later when logging began becoming popular due to its many benefits such as generating income during tough times!
