Elmira is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Elmira was Nicholas Nevin in 1824. He and his family founded a small farm on the east side of historic Albanytown Road near present day Elmira High School. The farm became known as "Nevin's Village". In 1827, John Nevin acquired 1/4 acre (0.18 km²) of land south of where Elmira now stands on the north side ofpresent-day Main Street for $5 per acre (1,600 ft²). This land became known as "Nevin's Hill" and later "Nevinstown". In 1830, Michael Nevin purchased from John Nevin another 1/4 acre (0.18 km²) adjacent to present-day Main Street for $10 per acre (2,800 ft²). This land became known as "Nevin's Mills" and later "Elmira". In 1831, Ezekiel Maple bought from Michael Nevin 1/4acre (0.18 km²) of land located east of present day Main Street for $12 per acre (3,000 ft²). This land became known as "Maplecroft", which remained until 1862 when it changed hands again and was renamed to Elmira after its owner - James Crouse - died without children. It wasn't until 1872 that government surveyor Moses Lapp purchased 3/8acre ($0.35 m²)surrounding what is now Main Street from James Crouse for $14 per quarter mile (.75 sq mi)). This property would remain in Lapp ownership until 1898 when he sold it to John Prentice who then sold it to George Weir who then sold it to Elias Howe who finally sold it to Samuel Ziegler who ultimately developed Elmyra into a city with 5 wards in 1908 which had a population over 10,000 people by 1911 when prohibition began making alcohol illegal throughout most of America so there were no businesses openable or developing downtown so Ziegler decided to close down the city but kept most assets such as buildings and landed property including Elmyra Creek just outside city limits

The late 19th century saw much growth for Elmira as manufacturing expanded nearby and migrant workers flooded into the area to find jobs in new technologies. In 1915, Elmira became one of the few towns in New York state to receive a World War I draft call-up bonus for its citizens’ service. During World War II, many businesses closed due to wartime restrictions on trade but Elmira refused to become a military base like other towns in New York State. Instead, it benefited from government largesse during the war years with several hundred jobs created throughout thetown's downtown area alone. After the war ended, many of those jobs were lost as industry shifted away from New York City or relocated abroad; however, some businesses did continue operations until they folded around 1970s according to local lore In recent decades, much has happened inside and outside of Elmira thanks to rapid development within our city limits since 2000 which has led to increased job opportunities along with significant economic stability overall. With continuing investment from Downtown Management District (DMD), new construction is ongoing that will bring over 1 million square feet of retail space onto Main Street by 2021 should be completed - this will generate even more business opportunity for locals as well as tourists visiting our quaint little town!
