Elmira is a small town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Oneonta, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out by Elias Howe in 1785 and named for his daughter Elmira (1808-86), who married George Washington Smith. The first settler was Abram French in 1824. In 1827, David Wilburn built a log cabin on what is today Elmira's Main Street. One of the first businesses in Elmira was French's grocery which operated from a store front until about 1890. In 1892, Jno. Ladd opened the Ladd Block on Main Street which became one of downtown Elmira's earliest and most popular bars/restaurants serving up American favorites such as hamburgers and hot dogs; it still operates as an independent business today with its own kitchen and bar area inside and outside the building.. Elmira is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. Elmira is the county seat of Chemung County. The first people to live here were the Mohawk Indians and their allies who retired from fighting in the American Revolution and arrived around 1775. They built a hunting lodge on an island in the town’s center which still stands today. In 1814, when Western New York became part of the United States, Elmira chose as its Seat of Government Albany instead of Perth Amboy because it was considered more important than Albany as a commercial center for eastern New York State. This choice did not sit well with some farmers in Northumberland County who had long disputed Albany’s jurisdiction over them. A political battle ensued that lasted into 1821 when George Washington was elected President and he appointed John Jay to be his Vice President; Jay refused to become a U.S Citizen and moved to New York City where he continued to serve as one of America’s most powerful figures during its fledgling formative days. In 1828, Elmira voted to secede from NY state due to economic reasons (partly due to high taxes) but later returned back under US control during the Indian Removal Act of 1830-1831 by joining other towns in Chemung County in what is now Buffalo Township.. When NY Govt changed flag laws there were many protests including several “die-ins” by students at Elmira High School on December 15th 1969 after Governor Edward Munch signs Executive Order #2 limiting freedom of speech on public campuses throughout NY State ensuring that only approved messages would be shown on school grounds; this order followed growing protests against Nixon's administration across all levels of education throughout America following his inauguration that includedor threatenedto remove federal support from universities that failed or refusedto implement new conservative policies such as affirmative action quotas). Elmira is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 6,898 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Elmira Townships and part of the Oneonta Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Elmira were Dutch traders in 1624, who named it "Netherlands" after their possessions there. The name was changed to "New Amsterdam" by Governor Nicolls in 1795 because ofbral British objections to Dutch control over what was then called New Netherland. In 1815, John Crouse founded two small villages on opposite sides of the Hudson River in what is now Elmira: Easton and North Hero. In 1825, he sold his interest in both villages to Peter Peel for $10,000 US. Peel renamed them "Elmira". When Buffalo reached its peak as a manufacturing center during the late 1800s, many people moved into Elmira andEaston from Buffalo; these settlers built churches and schools that remain standing today. During this time period there also were several mills in Elmira including Jardine & Co., Western Union Telegraph Company Building (later replaced by State University of New York campus), Purdy's Mills and William Dickey's grinding mill; as well as Unitarian Universalist Chapel (later First Unitarian Church) which still stands today. Throughout much of the 20th century Elmira experienced significant growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas such as Buffalo and New York City; however starting around 2000-2010 its growth slowed somewhat as housing prices rose sharply around the country while jobs did not follow suit or keep up with rising costs.
