Elmira is a small town in upstate New York. It was founded in 1795 by the Dutch settlers and became part of the United States in 1848. The population of Elmira increased from about 350 in 1840 to 2,500 in 1860. The first post office was established at Elmira in 1827. In 1865, the town was renamed after its founder, General Winfield Scott pronounced "Elmira." The town had a population of 8,000 by 1900 but declined to 3,000 by 1950. Today, Elmira has a population of about 1,200 and it is still an agricultural center with some manufacturing operations. The early history of the community is interesting because it reflects the growth of frontier Americananism during this time period. The Dutch settlers were attracted to the area because there were many rich mines and resources available hereabouts. By 1800, there were over 100 families living hereabouts and businesses started soon after they arrived. One such business was Joris & Sons Lumber Company which imported wood from Canada for use as beams in their buildings. Joris also conducted lumber sales through his store on Main Street until 1824 when he closed it down due to competition from more powerful entrepreneurs within his own society who sold products at much lower prices than he could afford to do so himself! One important figure associated with this early era of Elmira Growth was Phebe Van Wyck Huygens (1793-1847). She came originally from Rotterdam but spent most her life living and working within America's colonies - including North America's Thirteen Colonies (the present day United States). After arriving in America she married John Sibley Huygens (1768-1839) an immigrant who had come aboard HMS Bounty under Captains James Cook and Edward Braddock during their ill-fated exploration venture into South India back around 1788! They had two children: Phebe Huygens Sibley (1812-1892) who later became an American author and lecturer;John Sibley Huygens Jr.(1819-1900), also an author and professor;and Andrew Wills(1825-1902), one of America's leading architects throughout the 19th century! The settlement at Elmira began as a fishing village situated along what is now called Battery Road just south of what is now known as Main Street/Route 9 westward out towards Lake Erie where access was easiest for those travelling on horseback or wagon drawn carts laden with goods made their way inland during those times! Fishing continued to be a major source of income for these early settlers until sometime around 1830 when steamboats began ferrying people and goods across Lake Erie using both current routes followed by farmers travelling downriver then picking up passengers once they reached shore - this process continuing until 1850 when rails became available making transportation much easier! "In 1830...a group led by Peter Kieft purchased land northeast of downtown for $50 per acre." This purchase allowed Kieft & Co., merchants serving Albany County since 1697 (when Albany County was organized), direct commercial ties with other parts of New York State while providing service along what are today Route 9W between Buffalo Townships northwest thereof[sic]and Watertown Township east thereof".[1] kilts may have been worn outside all day long on that day too... folks must have got pretty heated up over that one!:)
