With increasing industrialization came increased traffic congestion along Route 9A which led to proposals for road improvement beginning around 1900 including construction of two expressways- One running northerly through town center towards Sayreville (now part of Webster) while another ran southerly parallel with Interstate 90 across rural areas until it met up with Route 9A at Exit 20 near downtown; these projects ultimately failed but are still remembered by locals today because they helped contribute tothe growth phase seen throughout much later years when Elmira boasted multiple large corporations like Intel., IBM., Wachtel Electric Co., Renowned Paper Mills etc.; however this growth phase did not last long given competition from other communities located closer to major metropolitan areas; nonetheless many residents still retained strong ties to their former home town even though they lived elsewhere during this time period
