By 1845, nearly all of the original Dutch colonists had died and their businesses had passed on to their children. However, some old- timers who had fled Holland continued to grow crops and process coffee until 1865, when electricity was introduced to the area. This change not only made it possible for people living near Elmira to enjoy delicious cup of Joe but also helped spur new business ventures that would help keep the town alive into the 21st century. The first commercial roasting plant was established in Elmira by Captain John Atherton in 1868. At first Captain Atherton used his own hands to roast coffee beans but soon he learned that using expensive equipment resulted in better quality beans than if he just used his own skills. He then started purchasing equipment from other small shops throughout New York State before starting his own company in 1892. Captain Atherton's Coffee Roasters continues to operate today as one of America's leading roasters with origins dating back more than 125 years!

Elmira is a town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 2,493 at the 2010 census. The name Elmira comes from the Iroquois word elm-i-rua which means "the place where the maple tree grows." The first settlers of this small community were Loyalists who fled to Canada during the American Revolution. In 1824, a group of Scottish immigrants settled in Elmira and soon began developing what would become an important agricultural sector of the town's economy. In 1838, a post office was established in Elmira and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1898. The townspeople soon erected a public schoolhouse on Main Street and started teaching local children between grades one and eight. By 1850, Elmira had developed into an important center for trade with its role as the junction of two U.S. routes: One ran through it from Buffalo to Albany and another led from Syracuse to Utica. A number of new businesses were founded in Elmira during this time including cigar stores, tobacco mills, woolen manufacturers and jewelers. During World War I (1914-18), many locals served in military units such as the 315th Infantry Regiment Armory Company which garrisoned Fort Drum on Lake Ontario near Syracuse before embarking for Europe on December 7th 1918; they are commemorated on display at Fort Drum today (January 15th). In 1922, when combined Schoharie County with Orangement County to form Schoharie County again, Elmira became part of that county despite being located within Schoharie Townships originally formed by Livingston and Schoharie counties together back in 1792/93 (#4). In recent years there have been efforts by several people to bring about annexation or merger of nearby townships into Schoharie County so that Elmira may regain some level of self-government; these proposals have not yet received any serious consideration however given that most residents continue to reside within their respective townships rather than within what is now known as “Schoharie County” as a whole...

Elmira was a small town in upstate New York until the late 1800s. Elmira was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Arendt and his wife, Catharine deWitt. The town was originally named for the Elm-tree family of trees that grew near the original settlement. In 1815, Queen Victoria granted a charter to Elmira for an academy which became known as "The Royal Academy of Fine Arts". The school closed in 1892 but reopened as part of the University at Buffalo in 1907. In 1922, Elmira became a city and has since experienced significant growth. Today, it is home to over 60 businesses including two hospitals and four schools. Prior to its incorporation into the City of Buffalo, Elmira had a population of about 350 people. The first permanent settler arrived in what is now Elmira on October 10, 1795 when Nicholas Arendt and his wife Catharine deWitt were landed with five other families on what is now Sayre Street. At that time, much of what is now Elmira was forested land which required cleared land for farming orchards and mills; only areas along river valleys were developed commercially. Arendt started building a mill on the River Averill about three miles from where he lived whileCatharine set up housekeeping with their children at nearby White's Mills (now called West Side Market). By 1800 both men were successful farmers; they raised corn and wheat until 1814 when they plantation some 400 acres (160 hectares) near present day North Broadway Avenue and Main Street; this area became known as Arendt Manor after them. They also built another mill on Sayre Street between White's Mills/West Side Market and Main Street by 1820 which continued operation until 1840 when it burned down due to an accident caused by blacksmithing mallet striking ironclad ship timbers near the water’s edge; however this event not only resulted in loss of revenue but also confirmed public concern over potential naval threats posed by vessels sailing close to shore during high tide . After Arendt Manor burned down Nicholas turned his attention towards founding a new village or hamlet within 100 feet (30 meters) from his old mill site so that fellow farmers could trade with him directly rather than going through long trips downriver each time they needed something . On November 12th 1830 he submitted plans for such a village called "Emmira" to George Carleton Greene who presided over Niagara County government at that time . Eliza Whitney later wrote: “It would be interesting if we could find any source whence came these early settlers [of Emmira], none more certain than those who claim descent from John Cushman who platted lot 49 acres (21 square kilometers) south of present day Union Station – still standing stone & structure commanding broad view across river & lake” The earliest reference to Emmria can be found in minutes taken by Supervisor Jonathan Edwards during a meeting held on December 2d 1830 , concerning boundary changes proposed by Nicholas Arendt situated east side of ceded lands lying northward Brother Ricewine creek cornering said lands line... It appears that developers throughout Erie County gave serious thought to developing Emmria as early as 1830″ There are several references mentioned above refuting claims made by some writers that Emmria sprang up spontaneously without any planning or input from its founders In fact evidence suggests quite opposite – many key decisions regarding formulating policies for development within Erie County were made during these early years based upon discussions among development professionals operating out of various townships within our county “ Eminent Domain Claims against formerVillages Within 70 Miles Of Cities And Towns In Niagara County Were Settled Prior To 2010″ One possible reason why Townships didn’t get involved earlier may have been due to concerns voiced about potential adverse effects such as suburbanization/industrialization adjacent To already heavily populated Village centers – potential consequences which could impact public health & welfare negatively IfTownship leaders had been proactive earlier there may have been less evidence pointing towards later settlements

The economy of Elmira became based on manufacturing and agriculture until the mid-20th century when industry declined and the town's population began to decline again. By 1970, there were only 5 residents living in Elmira.
