East Rockaway is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is bordered by the Bronx to the north, Brooklyn to the east, and Manhattan to the south. The neighborhood has a population of around 100,000 people. The area that now makes up East Rockaway was once part of Jamaica Plain. In 1764, General James Wolfe destroyed Jamaica Plain after an attack on his army by British forces commanded by Sir John Johnson. The indigenous Falangan people were displaced and their land taken over by English settlers who built homes and farms there. In 1814, following the Battle of Long Island, American troops burned some villages in what is now East Rockaway as part of Operation Neptune's Spear. Many residents came out to survey what had been done and they named their new community after Commodore Jacobus De Witt Sloat who led American forces during this battle. The first European settler in East Rockaway was Nicholas Nieto from Spain who bought 640 acres (258 hectares) on August 26th, 1815 from Governor Thomas Jefferson for $5 per acre ($ today). He set about building a small farmstead with only two rooms and one bathroom for himself and his family members. At that time it was one of the most isolated areas in all of Nassau County because it surrounded by dense forested hills which separated it from Hempstead Village on the mainland; however, he quickly learned how important transportation would be for his development as he imported goods such as flour from Holland and cheese from England through canal boats across what is now Roosevelt Boulevard/Sunset Boulevard . Nieto's daughter married Captain Augustus Ewing Jr., son of Senator Augustus Ewing (of Wayne County), who became president pro tempore of the New York Senate in 1827-1829 inclusive. When Senator Augustus died childless in 1830 his widow conveyed 1,561 acres (500 hectares) including 488 acres (190 hectares) comprising today's eastern border of East Rockaway to her kinsman Nicholas Nieto II for $10 per acre ($ today). Today these smaller side streets have been replaced with boulevards but their purpose remains largely unchanged viz providing driving access routes instead of straightaways . As Farming practices changed due to soil depletion brought about during climate change changes consequent droughts grazing herds animals went off feed leaving behind huge piles high enough so wind could blow them away creating beaches sandbars fillable water masses tidal waves heights tidal wave swamps mud flats

East Rockaway is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens. It was created on December 5, 1898 from parts of Jamaica and Richmond Heights. The population was 27,287 at the 2010 census. The area now known as East Rockaway was first inhabited by achaemenid Persians who built their city there in 449 BC according to Herodotus. In 1624, the English founded Long Island Village here after they seized control of New Netherland following the Battle of Whitehall. The English renamed it East Rockaway after they landed here in 1626 and developed this settlement further into an agricultural community with mills and warehouses until its incorporation into Queens in 1898. Many of the early settlers were Dutch Reformed Baptists who arrived from Holland during the seventeenth century seeking religious freedom from Spanish rule. The Dutch name for what is now East Rockaway (and other areas) may derive from one or more places such as "Ackermans" or "Akershus". In 1814, two brothers named Cornelius Weilandt opened a general store on Hempstead beach which became one of the most successful businesses on Long Island. During World War II, many people worked at Navy yards located along Eastern Shore Boulevard and Deer Park Road within easy walking distance of their homes. Many people also worked at nearby Nassau County government installations including North Shore Psychiatric Center and Suffolk County Airport (now Floyd Bennett Field). After World War II ended, many residents moved out to farming townships such as Suffern or North Tonawanda because commuting expenses were too expensive to maintain their downtown neighborhoods where they had lived all their life

The East Rockaway area of New York City is a long and narrow peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The peninsula was first settled by Native Americans, who called it Peconic Bay. In 1664, the English established a military post on the peninsula and named it Fort Orange. The Dutch founded Fort Nassau in 1714, but it was destroyed by British forces in 1715. The English built Fort Lee in 1718 and renamed it after their ally, George II of Great Britain. In 1774, troops from the Continental Army burned down Fort Orange to prevent its capture by the French. In 1848, the land on which present-day East Rockaway is located was acquired by John Dutton for $1 million dollars. Dutton developed what is now East Rockaway into one of New York City's most prosperous areas with his own businesses and homes. He also donated land to create Prospect Park and dedicated it as a public park in 1868. East Rockaway became part of Queens when Kings County was created in 1898. The population of East Rockaway increased rapidly during World War II due to its strategic location near Roosevelt Island and other naval bases on Long Island Sound. During the war, many people moved to East Rockway from other parts of Queens because they saw opportunities for work at nearby factories or plants.
