East Rockaway is a small town located in the Borough of Queens, New York City. The population was 24,466 as of 2010. It is bordered by the boroughs of Brooklyn to the north and Manhattan to the southeast. The town is named after East River where it begins. The first settlers in East Rockaway were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. They named their land "Oostendeel" (meaning "Outer Harbor"). In 1764, English colonists moved into what is now East Rockaway from Jamaica and renamed it for General James Clinton, 1st Baron Clinton of Kingston upon Hull. During World War II, many Japanese civilians were interned in and around East Rockaway because they were thought to be spies or saboteurs. One of the largest internment camps was located on Long Island at Vail Lake which held over 100,000 Japanese people during World War II. In 1951, when Queens became part of New York City, East Rockaway passed through its boundaries and became part of the new borough of Queens along with other rural towns such as Old Westbury and Newtown Square within Queens County. However, portions of East Rockaway including parts near Jamaica Bay still remain within Queens County today. In 1970-71, local developer Abe Beiser built a large housing development called Gateway Village on a tract that had been used for agricultural purposes since 1892. The original Gateway Village name may have been inspired by nearby Islip Manor which also grew out of farmland acquired by Beiser from his father-in-law John Dyson in 1957. Gateways refers to an entrance onto marshland leading into Blackwell's Beach where developers built homes overlooking Nassau Bay before boatloads of vacationers would come each year for swimming and sunbathing between 1964 and 1978

East Rockaway is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens and it is bounded by Elmhurst to the north, Midwood to the east, Coney Island to the south, and Jamaica Bay to the west. The population was 144,035 as of 2010. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now East Rockaway were Dutch colonists who founded a small settlement on Governors Island in 1624. They named their new settlement after their then-lord and governor of New Netherland: Hendrick van den Bergh (1585–1650). In 1686, English settlers arrived at Kingsbridge Heights with news of a rich trove of silver ore in present-day Staten Island. They renamed their new settlement East New York after King George II's original land grant for that part of Long Island. The first town meeting was held on April 14, 1755 at which residents voted to incorporate as a borough with powers over its own affairs including taxation. However, this measure failed when it was opposed by Mayor John Bridge (1721–1777) and other established officials. On February 7, 1814, during the Mexican War of Independence from Spain, an American force under General James Wilkinson attacked Mexico's main fortifications at Veracruz de Santa Anna nearpresent-day Corrales Beach on Easton Beach Peninsula in what became known as Battle of Easton Beach. The battle ended inconclusively when Wilkinson's unit collapsed following heavy casualties due mainly to disease and exposure; however American forces eventually captured Veracruz de Santa Anna after three days'combat without loss.[1] As a result of this victory over Mexico and subsequent Uprising against Spanish rule that occurred throughout much of North America during this period,[2] Easton Beach Peninsula came within American hands for brief periods during this time period before being ceded back to Mexico once again becoming part of Essequibo County until 1898 when it became part of Queensborough County[3]. In 1836 an act was passed establishing two Boards for Education – one for public instruction within our limits only while another Board should be set up for teaching children between grammar school age 12 years old upwards through college preparatory institutions – both boards should have members appointed by the mayor subject only to impeachment if they find that any member has engaged themselves too prominently or availed themselves too freely In addition thereto there shall be such other powers vested herein not inconsistent with law or equity as are hereby conferred upon us by said act congress […] Notwithstanding anything herein contained no person below 18 years old shall ever be admitted into any Academy or Institution… [4] This regulation continued until 1967 when it was repealed by amendment 2nd sponsored by Borough President Edwin Lamberth (D). On May 1st 1865 all public schools closed effective September 15th due largely because many black families had moved into nearby Jamaica Plain since emancipation had finally been granted there four years earlier; but some white families still lingered in order maintain close social ties with their African-American neighbors.[5][6] A large influx thereof followed shortly thereafter when portions borderting Orchard Park on one side and Sunnyside on the other were annexed into Brooklyn Heights creating what would become today’s downtown Brooklyn portion[7]. Many people from eastern Queens relocated here during this time period because transportation costs weren’t very high compared to Manhattan[8][9], although affordable housing wasn’t always available[10]. During World War I various industries moved out here such as munitions factories making artillery shells etc.; also garment factories making clothing items like uniforms etc., but most production stopped around 1920[11][12]; these factories typically closed down either because orders dried up or competition grew more fierce elsewhere[13]: these closures led directlyto job losses among workers who often couldn't afford rent prices above $100/month! After World War I many companies returned although smaller operations did continue until recently; some notable examples include AECO Energy Corporation which retired its last coal mine here in 2006,[14] Essex Mills located just outside Of Hawthorne Village opened in 2016,[15],[16], Empire State Development LLC which operates two shopping centers next door each containing 1 million sq ft total area — One being called Hudson Yards And One being called Lenox Hill Plaza — both anchored by gigantic Macy’s department stores; formerly known as “Empire State Fair Complex” These developments have contributed significantly towhether increasing gentrification activities taking place adjacent blocks away where countless high end shops now line up alongside low end apartments -Street Name: Lenox Hill Blvd / 112th St & Lexington Ave
