East Rockaway is a town in Queens, New York City. It was established in 1824 as one of the first towns on Long Island. The population was 29,554 at the 2000 census. East Rockaway is bordered by the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens to the north and east, and Manhattan to the south. The town's name comes from its location on an old Native American hunting ground known as "East Raccoon". The first settler in what would become East Rockaway was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived with his family in 1824. De Montresor named his new town after himself and his father-in-law, Sir George Beekman. In 1827, Englishman John Nichols purchased land adjoining present-day East Rockaway from de Montresor for $100 per acre. Nichols had been interested in buying land on Long Island since childhood and had planned to settle it himself. He named his new community "East Hampton" after his ancestral home in England. In 1830, he sold all of his holdings except for one parcel to Colonel Augustus Dearborn for $10 per acre ($140 per mile). Dearborn had come overland from Great Britain with plans to establish a farmstead on Long Island that would rival those of fashionable Nassau County farmers such as John Davenport and Simon Tatham Jr.. Dearborn's farmstead became known as Dearbornville after him; however, it never materialized due to lack of resources or interest by early settlers. By 1840, only about 100 residents lived in what is now East Rockaway Village (then part ofBrooklyn).
