The United States Army deployed gift history in East Rockaway, New York during the World War II era. The town was home to a large military installation and the army's gift history reflects this. The army's first deployment in East Rockaway occurred on December 8, 1941. At that time, the town was under Japanese occupation and gifts were not allowed. However, Lieutenant Colonel John A. Ketchum of the 5th Infantry Division donated two suitcases of clothing and four soldiers' hats to the local Salvation Army branch in order to provide help for war-time residents. In 1945, the army returned to East Rockaway after World War II ended and it continued to deploy Gift History until 1971 when it closed its installation. The town's gift history is still celebrated today and there are numerous events held annually including a parade and open house celebrating military veterans who have served in East Rockaway over the years.

The New York Army National Guard's 188th Infantry Brigade deployed in support of Operation Neptune's Spear, the NATO military campaign to oust Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. The brigade arrived in East Rockaway on November 12, 2003 and began training on December 1. On January 8, 2004, the brigade participated in a NATO exercise at Rota Naval Base, Spain. In early February 2004, the brigade was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom by order of United States President George W. Bush. The brigade departed England on March 2 and arrived at Kuwait City on March 6. The brigade then traveled to Baghdad where it was assigned to 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). From there, it transported troops across Iraq into Coalition-controlled territory and conducted combat operations against the insurgency. On May 7, 2004, the 188th Infantry Brigade activated as an attachment of 4th Infantry Division (Light) near Ramadi following redeployment from stability patrols throughout Iraq. In late October 2004 the division was redesignated as 4th Infantry Division (Armored). On November 15 Fourth Infantry Division (Armored) relieved 88th Inf Bde which had served 'inland' of Baghdad since Jan 24/04 during Euphrates Shield operation; also relieved 101st Abn Div who had been operating out of Baqubah airbase since Oct 25/03 during Anfal offensive
East Rockaway is a borough in Queens, New York City. It is bounded by the borough of Nassau County to the south, Brooklyn to the east and north, and Queens to the west. The population was 456,821 at the 2010 census. East Rockaway was formed from part of Jamaica on April 1, 1898. The area that now includes East Rockaway was originally settled by English colonists in 1624 as Hempstead Neck Township. On July 1, 1898, parts of Jamaica were annexed into East Harlem as part of a larger change in government which also saw the creation of Brooklyn Heights as an enclave within Queens. In 2001, following Hurricane Floyd's damage to much of southern Queens and some neighborhoods in NorthBrooklyn (including Red Hook), Mayor Rudolph Giuliani proposed annexing all or most of eastern Elmhurst Avenue between Vernon Boulevard and 95th Street into his proposed new Highbridge-Forest Hills neighborhood. This proposal was defeated by members of the City Council but it has been mentioned again as a possibility for future annexation plans with little resolution since then. East Rockaway, located in Queens County, is a small town that has been around for over 100 years. The community was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 1800s and it soon became known as an agricultural and commercial center. In the 1920s, East Rockaway made a name for itself as a hotspot for New York City's large Italian population. Today, East Rockaway is an important community with many cultural and historical associations. The history of East Rockaway cannot be accurately described without first mentioning its namesake, EastRockaway Beach. This beach was first developed on Long Island Sound in the early 1900s by local entrepreneurs who hoped to capitalize on the growing tourist industry in New York City. The beach quickly became popular with American soldiers and their families stationed in nearby Manhattan during World War I, and it continued to be used by civilians until the late 1940s when it was classified as state land. In 1955, federal officials decided to move the entire Italian-American population of New York City fromStaten Island to Queens because of overcrowding on Staten Island. To accommodate these new residents, authorities built dozens of homes and businesses near the then-new Brooklyn Bridgehead area of Queens. The decision to relocate Irish-Americans also had ripple effects throughout eastern Queens; many Irish immigrants relocated to areas such as Elmhurst or Jackson Heights after their homes were destroyed in riots following independence from Ireland in 1922. Today, East Rockaway is home to a diverse population that includes people from all over the world including several thousand Italians who continue to call the village their home. Additionally, there are numerous multi-ethnic groups living within walking distance of each other which makes for an interesting mix when exploring this small town’s history!
East Rockaway was one of the most heavily populated neighborhoods in New York City. It is now a part of the Queens borough and includes a number of buildings that were once located in East Rockaway. The neighborhood was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1624. The area became known as "East Rockaway" after a nearby rise on the East River called "Rockaway Point." In 1764, the British conquered New York City and renamed it Upper Manhattan; East Rockaway became part of this new district. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British General James Wolfe attacked American forces at what is now Park Slope on Long Island; his troops burned many homes in East Rockaway as they retreated. This event is sometimes cited as the beginning of organized crime in New York City. In 1827, following annexation by New York City, East Rockway became one of its five original districts. In 1865, it became part of the newly created Bronx borough; however, it continued to be used primarily for agricultural purposes until 1965 when it attained city-widehood under Mayor John Lindsay's plan for subway construction. Mayor Lindsay also made East Rockway an important community center with schools and churches located there; today much of this remains unchanged from its early days.
